I agree with Nitro in several respects. I also picked up Duke for $25 dollars. It is nowhere near as bad as reviews have painted it, I'm sort of ashamed I let said reviews affect my judgement so much.
However it does have several faults. The worst of which is that the graphics engine is pretty wonky. It just doesn't run well. I decided to turn post processing effects off since they seem to go haywire, I'm not sure if it is because I have 2 video cards or not.
While Duke does have some funny lines, it definitely wreaks of trying too hard. For instance, the girls with Duke at the beginning are absolutely annoying. If they had been even slightly tolerable it probably would have changed my entire appearance. I would rather have seen Duke with someone worth having than some complete retards. I know it sounds trivial, but it makes a significant difference on his persona. When I played Duke Nukem 3D, Duke came across as a larger than life hero and a general badass with funny lines. Playing DNF is like finding out that the highschool quarterback who kicked ass still thinks he is in high school at 40. And just so we are clear, that isn't a knock at Duke for doing similar things after 12 years, it is more than that. Duke went from Hero to Megalomaniac. That is the problem with his personality and the jokes that surround him for some of the game.
But, even with those flaws the game most importantly keeps me entertained more so than many other FPS games. And for that reason alone it is worth playing.
