It's a Geek Special, though - so you can forget about using a 10% code. I wonder why they just don't make EVERYTHING on their site a Geek Special since it's quite obvious they use it to prevent having to honor the code on the most desirable stuff.

Well Monty - they can't really get much smaller and still house 5.25" devices. 😀

But if you want a 3.5" enclosure - all they have are separate USB 2.0 and Firewire enclosures.

BTW - these aren't "Geek Specials" so the easily found 10% off promo codes should work.
 
Since the order is over $50, check out the thin wallet for something is good until 12/31/02 🙂. Let's just say that it includes a free infrared remote control.
 
I saw what looked to be the same products (can't tell manufacturer from the CompGeeks website, but the package colors were the same blue and yellow), at MicroCenter B&M stores for about the same price. IIRC correctly, the 3.5" enclosure was $49.99 + tax, which is in the neighborhood of the CompGeeks price + shipping, plus you can return it more easily.
 
I got one of these about two months ago. Anyone else annoyed with how loud they are? I took out the fan and replaced it but it's still just as loud as it was before. Anyone know how to undervolt the fan to quiet it down? I'd be tempted to disconnect the fan altogether but there is a power supply inside that I don't want to get too hot. Any suggestions?

I did find that you can cut down some of the noise by attaching a square piece of notecard in the back on the top and bottome making a "c" shape.
 
If I forego the combo USB2.0 and Firewire drive, should I get a firewire version, or USB 2.0 version? Are there any advantages/disadvantages to each one, aside from the obvious speed difference?

It depends what you want it for. Use Firewire if you're going to use it with a hard drive--especially a 7200rpm one. USB1.1 is miserable--especially for transfering large files and burning cds but it is pretty universal so if you're going to be using it on several different machines that may not have a Firewire connection, then USB2.0 will probably be what you want.

I bought the Firewire/USB2.0 combo because I would be interfacing with older machines that didn't have fast connections (had to use USB 1) but I still wanted something that I can use for a long time. Having experienced the performance differences now firsthand, I'd probably go with Firewire which gives you the ability to "chain" devices together.
 
Can you boot off of firewire or usb 2.0?

and on the dual enclosure it looks like you can add another pci card can you?
 
Just get the firewire one..use 10% off..with shipping and tax the total was $50.xx. I have two of them put an 80GB and 120GB. Get the $18 firewire pci card at newegg. Here's a link It is about 1GB per min for transfering files. This sure beats my old external scsi hard drives back in the days. Cost me $300 for each adaptec scsi card. Bought three of those.
