Info Dual EPYC 7601 build. Comments and questions ?

So, here is is. Dual EPYC 7601 32 core CPU's and 256 gig ECC registered DDR4 2666 ram, with a 1 tb NVME and a 2 tb spinner drive. 128 threads of greatness ! About $3400 for 2 CPU's, memory and the motherboard. About the same prices (and possibly performance) of the new 3970x. But I do have 8 memory channels. Then again, it only runs at 2400 mhz. But it only runs 50c 100% loaded. I can see why they run so slow after seeing the manual and the 1u heatsinks they were intended to run using.

Since you say its probably similar performance to a 3970x, how does it compare in perf/watt?
I believe in another thread you said the MB allows for 7002 series cpus, what cpu models are you going to keep an eye out for in the future to upgrade?

Its probably worse perf/watt than the 3970x. I got it because I can't find a 3970x anywhere. Its draws 450 watts from the wall. The only consolation is that the performance is probably similar, and the cost is about the same and I can BUY it.

Edit: looking for dual 7742's, but thats $15000 and out of my budget right now.

Are these Zen or Zen 2 based Epycs?
 
What hurtz does it run at under full load? Any higher than factory base clock? Wondering if it runs like a zen+ ir a zen as far as clocks.

Only 2400 mhz. You can't OC these. But boy do they run cool....50c full load ?
 
Also what happened to the es 7551's? They mislabeled or duds? Sure hope you did not lose out on those...

Well, I can't return them, and I can't find a motherboard they will work on. I am emailing a support area from a vendor, and if I can get the right bios, I can use them. But at over $500 a motherboard for a 1 socket, its going to be spendy. 2990wx's will be cheaper on ebay. (maybe)
 
Well, I probably should reverse them. But it requires that I take the motherboard out to get the thefan clips, and I don't feel like it. They are only running 50c like this, so why bother ?
I'd only reverse them if you can fit them under the heatsinks. Well mostly because I prefer push over pull. I don't think it really matters and I don't think that there is a real difference in case air flow at this level by having them send air down the case versus up. Or I should word that better, I don't think it affects temps more than maybe a degree here or there. It's not ideal, but I don't think it actually affects anything in any realistically measurable way.
 
I get 1.0...1.4 million PPD with 88 threads in Folding@home, which is 1.5...1.8 times of what 56 threads can do.
Now I certainly am wondering what happens if 128 threads are thrown into a single Folding slot.
hmmm.... I may have to try that. Right now its catching me up on Rosetta because it has all that extra memory....

And researching a new motherboard for the 7551 ES chips I still have !
 
AMD says all core boost is 2700. Perhaps it's a motherboard limitation, or a bios thing?
Got me. Its a new bios, and a new motherboard that even supports the 7002 series (rome) and there is no overclocking, and its definitely loaded 100%. Not sure, but lscpu says 2400 (linux)

lscpu shows you have the precision boost flag enabled and the base clock is 2.2 GHz, so at 2.4 GHz you are boosting, just not as high as the max all core boost frequency. Given you're running DC applications which tend to be very heavy duty and your temps are fine, seems like you're just running into a power/current limit. You can try looking for the cTDP setting if it is available in the BIOS and unlocking a bit more power that way, but if it's not in there then it seems like everything is working as expected and that just because the load is so heavy, you're not reaching your max all core boost frequency (but again, you're still above base which is the guaranteed all core frequency).
