Dual-core over quad-core right now for gaming but how about the future?

Releasing a part has little to do with when people can actually find them in stock.

After releasing QX9560 it seemed like it took 3-4 months (to recollection) before people stopped posting requests in the forums on where they could find Q9450/9550's in stock.

Announcing a $284/1k-tray pricepoint SKU is all Intel needs to do to pin the upper-limit of AMD's Deneb SKU's.

Intel doesn't have to volume ship those $284 SKU's in order to inflict the damage on AMD's Deneb APSs.

i got a BFG GTX280, e8500 - which *better OC* - Asus P5e x48 MB, and 2x2GB OCZ PC8500 [1066] all arriving this week from NewEgg

NOW .. you can tell me i should have "got this instead"

i am thinking my rig should not be so platform-limited for 4870x3 crossfire anymore

microcenter has E0 e8400 for $149 online or instore. Good luck with your e8500, and if it's the original C0 you might still be able to get it to 4.4g with some love. Hopefully you'll get an E0 e8500.

i think Newegg has mostly E0s now; Microcenter doesn't have the 'no interest for a year' plan and i wanted an 8500 over 8400. For luck.

i prefer to use my thermalright cooler and a scythe120 instead
- and i lap the CPU also

4.4Ghz is a minimum to keep 4870x3 Crossfire happy
- i know i could not get that with a Q9550

the UE3 engine already does a lot better with quad core. And so do a few other games... If the game works better with a dual core, it usually works just as well with a quad core (aka, it doesn't need the extra power). But if it does need it, well, your dualy aint gonna cut it.
I upgraded from an E8400 to a Q6600

first of all, my e4300 is at 3.33Ghz and that does not cut with even a 4870x2! i think your q6600 would be just as bad a bottleneck as mine is now. Yours is great for up to - and perhaps including - GTX280, i think. It is a great match for gt260 or hd4870 imo.

Here is what i reason: if the dual core is fast enough .. say an optimistic 8500@ 4.6 Ghz .. its higher core speed will mostly compensate *in gaming* for a slower clocked quad core below 4 Ghz in the games you mention.
--and in 90+% of other games it will run away from your QC

if i only had a single 4870 or GTX280 [i do] ... but i mean if i wasn't using Crossfire Hd4870x3 ... i'd probably have gone with a QC. i simply need the fastest O/C'd CPU i can afford - and that would have been the Q9550 or e8500 .. with what i saved on my CPU, i got 2x4GB of PC8500 [my PC6400 won't get even close to 1200mhz without serious divider usage]

4.6ghz is WAYYYY beyond optimistic OC...

in most games a 4870x2 + a Q6600, the bottleneck is the 60FPS max the LCD monitor can display, not the video card or the CPU. For the few games that are limited by those, a quad usually helps. (oblivion, supreme commander, mass effect, microsoft flight sim...)
