DannyLove: We don't want that to happen, that's why we're trying to get people to join up, and I think that everyone is going to try to max out their production.
SWSorch: That's cool, you should stop by the DC forum sometime anyway, we treat visitors from other teams just as if they were our own, and there are always interesting topics
Welcome to everyone that's joined so far!
We're happy to have anyone, no matter what processing power you have. Do you just want to run the screensaver version with the pretty graphics on your old P133? That's great, we'd love to have you. Got an officeplace full of P4s that sit idle a lot? We'd love to have you!
It may seem kind of geeky, or you may think that the project is pointless or silly, but give it a shot, it's actually quite fun! As mentioned by Sukhoi, we have a couple of daily stats runs so that everyone can see how much they're producing, and how their rankings are doing. We also have individual races, where several people will race to get to a certain milestone, such as 1000 WUs. 1000 WUs, even at at 4 hours apiece for a good machine, wow, sounds like a lot, right? Not really, you'd be surprised at how fast you get there! It's almost like an addiction, you start out with 1 machine, maybe running the GUI (screenaver). Then you switch to the CLI (command-line) version. Next thing you know, you've got every possible machine you can running SETI for you, and you look at everything in terms of possible SETI assimilations... When I started out just over a year ago running it on my PII 233@307, Sukhoi, who got me to join up in the first place, had about 600 WUs... I never thought I'd make it anywhere near there, and now I have 1700+. The other main thing we have is the Mini-Team races. The first one went for a little less than a month in July and August, and featured 2 teams and 25 racers. After that, we had the Halloween Grand Prix, which ran from near the end of August to, oddly enough, Halloween, with 32 racers. We just finished our latest race, the Holiday45, which started 45 days ago, and ended just under 4 hours ago. This time we had 3 "super-teams", each divided up by production into "mini-teams", and we had over 50 racers! We don't have plans for another one yet, I think everyone needs a break from this one, but hopefully in the new year, or maybe after the race with DSLR, we'll have another one.
So, join us for the race, or at least give it a shot, if you don't like it, that's alright, but judging from the amount of people that joined the last time we were racing DSLR and how almost all of the stayed, and the way that many new members get very involved in the community, I think you'll probably like it
Added bonuses to doing SETI (or another DC project) for the TeAm:
- the Distributed Computing forum is probably the best tech support forum on the whole board, people are extremely friendly, and you usually get replies quicker as well
- it provides a great excuse to buy new or upgrade old hardware
- if you're really competitive, there are lots of races and stuff to satisfy that feeling
- you get beer and babes for passing milestones
P.S. If you're already somewhat into SETI, and want to add more processing power, but are having trouble getting it, try offering free tech support to neighbours, friends, and family if they'll run SETI for you.
P.P.S. Worried that SETI will eat up all of your already strained processing power? No problem, you can run the screensaver version, which only runs while your screensaver is active (and has very pretty graphics if you choose it as your screensaver), or you can run the command-line (CLI; much faster) version with a utility such as SETI Driver to control its priority, and you won't even notice a difference, even on older, slower machines.
