True enough. I could go for a used 1D, but my 10D serves me very well; well enough that it'll hold me over until the next generation of 1-Series is off backorder. A used MKII is an attractive option also; but I'm more interested in the next generation of Canon EOS than an increment (even if a large increment) over what I already have. I'm patient, and I'm comfortable with a $3,000.00 camera purchase in a years' timeframe. Then again, perhaps I'll just get some glass, stand pat on my 10D and sink the dough into another obsession.

If you can wait, I guess all the more power to you. I don't think I could ever go back to the D70, I love my D2H that much. Maybe as a backup body.. yeah. If you do spend that on glass, I can't even imagine how great your collection will be.. and the next generation body to take advantage of it.. *drools

Well, it'll likely be either or; a new 1-Series body or a super telephoto. I like to think I can do them both but the numbers just don't add up! Well, they add up alright;). Ah, I'll probably end up settling for a used MKII and a 100-400L and then have to lay low for a few years. But a guy can dream.

You make it seem like a MKII and a 100-400L is a bad thing. GIMME THAT! :D

EXACTLY the same as me man! I just got the Sigma about 4 days ago and the 50mm 1.8 is on the way! Hah!

Do many of you shoot with a flash? I've been thinking about the 420EX or the 550EX...not sure if the 550 is worth it. I would like to use a flash sometimes to bounce off of a low ceiling sometimes with a diffuser...hm...

Nikon D1 (bought used early this spring)

Nikon 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 AF-S
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AI-S
Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro (1:1)

Vivitar 285HV flash

Hoya polarizer, Stratos flash bracket, m42-to-F adapter for my old screw mount macro adapters and tubes, a couple of cheap and crappy tripods, and a few other things that I forgot.

I should win the prize for oldest DSLR (until someone shows up with a Kodak DCS 420 or Nikon/Fuji E2)... ;)

I shoot with available light. If I have a flash available, I use it. ;)

(sorry, I can't think of who that quote came from)

The trick in shooting flash is to balance the ambient exposure (your shutter speed and aperture combination) with the flash exposure (based on aperture and flash power combination). Doing this properly will highlight your subject subtly, without putting the background into utter darkness (unless that is what you want). I suggest reading about bouncing flash, various diffusers such as mini-softboxes, and flash brackets, if you are interested in ways to make flash photos with a pleasing and "natural" appearance.

2 Nikon F5s
nikon 17-35 f2.8 AFS
28-70 F2.8 AFS
80-200 F2.8 AFS

if i were you, i'd get the D70 as a backup. it's cheaper than the D100 and is loaded with more features than the D100 as well.

yea def go with a D70 over the D100 at this point

The D100 has a better viewfinder, better shadow detail recovery, and optional vertical grip. I've even considered upgrading to the D100 as a stopgap till I can afford a pro body.

I've shot with the d70 and not too crazy about it. It seems too light and it doesn't fit my hand. The other thing is that the D100 are selling for fairly cheap like $600 sometimes.

At first I thought the D70 was "just fine," but now that I've used a D1 for a while, the D70 of an acquaintance feels like a plastic toy. Don't handle a pro body if you don't want to be permanently spoiled for the lower-level bodies.

I want the Canon 1D mkII. I may just bypass the Rebel XT and 20D to go straight to the big dog.

My goodness, this thread shows me how much I don't know aboud DSLR's and lenses. I am hoping to get a Rebel XT or D70 by early next year (my Canon Powershot G3 is wearing out after only 2 years... and 4500 pictures...)

I now know where to come for advice when I am looking. I was just figuring on getting the XT and kit lens until I learned more about taking pictures with a SLR, though a macro lens would be awesome.

Reasons to buy the pro body: much better viewfinder, faster and more reliable AF, build quality and weather sealing, larger sensor (in Canon's case) for better subject isolation (relationship between angle of view, focal length, and aperture: 75mm on a 1Ds at 2.8 has less DOF than 50mm on a 20D at 2.8 - this is also a benefit of the 1D series to a slightly lesser extent). In other words, if you can afford it, if you can carry it, and if you can use the features, a pro body is more than worth the cost.
