I heard cyborgs have limitless attention spans who never get distracted, lack any human emotion, tremendous amounts of memory (especially when knowing all 2,300 pages of their local traffic laws) or compassion. All but one car I've owned has had over 100k miles when I got it. That one car that didn't had 94k and it now has 108k. Yeah, it is true that usually around 100k is when you hit a maintenance point that requires some money to be spent, but whatever.

My 2002 Chevy has 212k miles on it, so heck yeah vehicles can last a lot longer than 100k miles!

20 years and 1 ticket sounds like a pretty good track record to me. A lot better than most people I know. I've never had a ticket yet but I've only been driving for 10 years. Of course, not being in NJ probably helps 😉

I've been on here long enough to know the general reaction. And people always get crap for ranting on tickets and making excuses. Even when they don't they still get crap.

And if I can make this any more entertaining for you bastards just let me know.

this shit pisses me off. I live in a desirable area right outside of the city... housing developers are building and building yet the main road to the highway is only 1 fucking lane each way - my subdivision is about 6 miles north of the highway and there are several subdivisions north of me

If I don't leave the house before 7am I can count on a 45 minute wait just to get to the goddamned highway then, wait some more.
 
I hear ya OP. I live in a pretty traffic congested city - and you get traffic even on the weekends here, not just rush hour. It's sad. I totally understand trying to phase out when you're driving.

Personally though, I try to take public transit. We have a "park and ride" bus system that lets the busses take the HOV lanes - you just go to the park and ride and... park and sit on the bus. Then I walk to work. But that's only if you work downtown like I do. As much as I find $7 for a round trip on a bus to be a complete ripoff, I guess it's still better than sitting in traffic in my car... burning gas, burning up maintenance, etc..

What sucks is when I have a client that is in town.... Then I don't have a choice and have to sit through traffic.

It wasn't like I skidded across the intersection.

Obviously I could of been more careful -- but when you drive in areas when you are accustom to seeing certain signs and when they are not there -- it's not fair to say "you should of known better". I definitely could of been more aware and careful giving the speed limit of 35 with the big red do not enter signs on the other side of the road, so I can't argue that. This is why I am not going to contest it.

How much time does the park & ride system soak up in a day? In my area we do have park and rides, though it's an added 30-45 minute trip when stopping as multiple stops.

It's no secret that Jersey is much more strict than NY. People on the NJ Turnpike are also much more maniacal than the LIE. LIE is more like the GSP... we don't have a NJTurnpike equivalent as far as everyone going 80. We don't even have a hard and fast law that says left lane is passing only.

One -- it's expensive -- Everywhere you go with it, especially in Jersey, people want your god damn money because you have it. Parking? 15 an hour easily. Parking not in a private garage that won't charge you dearly in the major cities around me will get you toed, booted, and fined. Tolls -- FU -- I wish I could paddle the Hudson with a row boat and paddle with my middle fingers extended. Going to a School? Best be sure to shell out a huge amount of money for a parking permit.

Tolls, only if we have to cross bridges, which we never do unless we go to NJ or upstate... this is a big enough island (including Manhattan/Queens/Brooklyn) that we only do that a handful of times a year. We pay a parking permit for taking the LI railroad, that's it. No idea what this school parking permit is you're talking about. Maybe it's a private property thing, in which case, it's not at all surprising.

We do have public servants like cops and teachers making a lot of money through our taxes though. Fault is on NY unions. Not sure if NJ is the same.


Two -- traffic laws are ludicrous -- don't use your turn signal less than 100 feet before turning is points and fine (and you better count those god damn feet), squeak your tires is careless (aside from burning rubber which I agree is reckless), license plate holder from dealership obscured the plate is a fine, and basically every law ever written and seen enforced -- and you should visit a traffic law forum for entertainment mind you -- will have you driving on egg shells for the fear of being in Jail and spending millions for an attorney for driving what would be described by a judge in your hearing as a homicidal death machine. I am not saying I ever gotten anyone of those tickets, this one careless driving ticket after 20 years of driving is it. I just sympathize for people who have to deal with frivolous townships.

There is something to be said for actual enforcement of laws though. I can't count the number of times I wish people got ticketed for rolling stop signs. They hardly even touch their brakes.

I'm nearing 40 and don't find driving any more stressful than it once was. If anything, I've learned about patience and that beating the other guy to the next stop light is more than stupid. Having infants/toddlers in the car will calm you down a lot, but this is not to say I don't ever drive spiritedly any more, I just pick my spots. Relax and you will have fewer problems (tickets or potential to receive them). More importantly, less stress.

Yeah, it's all a matter of perspective. When I lived in rural Connecticut, I loved driving on back country roads with no traffic on them.

Now I live on the coast, and waste 2 hours of my life every work day commuting in kamikazi traffic on I-95. I can't fucking wait for auto driving cars now, so I can just push a button and not be bothered with this shit.
 
Driving/cars have fallen way down my list as I've gotten older and now have kids. I really only drive our vehicle when heading to the mountains.

I will admit that a lot of this has to do with living in a city. Also, I've found that while I still enjoy cars from a technical point, my interest in spending money on them has diminished. I would rather put my money in a number of other hobbies or invest/save. We are a one car family now for 3.5 years and it has been great.
 
I drive about once per week. Was walking to the subway this morning and happened to look down the street where my car was parked and saw orange neon no-parking signs on the trees that said "No Parking Friday." They weren't normal street-sweeping signs, they were for tree-trimming along the power lines, must have been put up yesterday or the day before. I'm just glad I happened to glance down that way, otherwise I would have a $150 ticket when I got back from work. ^_^
 
I look forward to the day when I can get in a car, tell it where to take me, and lay back and relax as it goes on its own.

Cars as a service can't come soon enough. If only so there are less idiots manually operating these giant, fast moving machines.

Hopefully it means less awkward cab rides too. Fucking creepy ass mofo's....

Hopefully a company like Uber is prepared to say "Bye bye drivers", and buys a ton of automated cars with no driver.

If anything, taking the bus SAVES me ~5 minutes. But depending on traffic, it could make me ~5 minutes late. It all depends on the time of day, but overall it's hella worth it.

As far as stops, I'm not sure how your bus works (maybe you should try it for a day?) but ours goes down 2 main streets in downtown (One that goes North from the south side, and then goes east all the way down). It stops at every other stop light (assuming someone needs to get off, otherwise it keeps going). There is usually an abundance of people getting off at certain stops, so it's not uncommon to skip a bunch.

From there, everyone walks to their respective offices. Mine is ~3 blocks from the stop.

Plus, the seats aren't half bad and you can do work or anything you want while on the ride. Hell, I can charge work time without a problem if I actually bust out of my laptop and start working.

Not only are they prepared, they can't wait for it to happen. They can pocket all the money that would normally go to the driver. The cars can sit in strategically positioned warehouses (saving gas/electricity) and get summoned the moment someone requests a ride. They'll have a subscription that people pay monthly for. Get a car when you need it, no worries about parking or tickets or insurance/inspections/emissions/etc. It'll be Netflix for cars.
