I have trouble when i try to install ati drivers. I use omega drivers but i wanted to try ati and i uninstalled and used the driver cleaner that comes with the omega drivers in safe mode. Then i try installing the ati drivers and the drivers dont work. In device manager it say 9800 pro couldnt start but the 9800 pro secondary is fine. i have tried uninstalling and trying again and nothing. some reason the drivers will not work with my primary 9800 pro display. Cab cleaner?? How do i go about using it? Do i use driver.cab and sp1.cab?? help!! Any ideas???

The cab cleaner in Driver Cleaner 2.7 is easy to use,it`s in tool menu, you just select " SP1" in your case since you have WinXP SP1(service pack 1).

Taken from the Driver Cleaner readme file
Usage for XP / XP SP1 / XPSP2
--------------------------------------------
ATI:
1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect
2. Remove ATI driver from add/remove programs then remove the control panel from add/remove programs (for 3.8 and up use ATI - Software Uninstall Utility)
3. Reboot into safe mode (F8 during boot up)
4. On reboot into safe mode WinXP SP1/SP2 will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. If you can cancel out of the auto install hardware wizard then skip the rest and run Driver Cleaner! If you can NOT cancel out of auto detect wizard then...
5. Navigate to device mgr->display adapter->uninstall and/or remove ATI display adapter but do not reboot
6. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)
7. Run Driver Cleaner
8. Empty recycle bin and reboot
9. Install the new drivers and control panel

Im trying to delete my omega drivers, is the control panel with the display driver b/c in my device manager i dont see control panel

This prolly stupid but... I've heard the secondary drivers are for PCI (the primary being AGP), any way your BIOS got fouled up and show PCI as primary graphics?

The 'secondary' entry in Device Manager is for the secondary output on your video card (usually the DVI output). It has nothing to do with PCI.

The secondary is for the secondary RAMDAC on the ATI dual head cards.

Shouldn't matter if you're using drivercleaner. Are your MB chipset drivers up to date? They should be installed prior to Catalyst.

I have been having problems with my computer rebooting and when restarts it says a device driver problem. And it started after switching from nvidia to ati. And the only drivers at the time was omega drivers that i could get to work. So i was going to try the real ati drivers.

Odd you couldn't get the ATI drivers to work. Seems like you have some issues with remnant driver files to me.

What would be the best way to fix the problem?

If drivercleaner won't remove your old NV and ATI drivers, I'm not sure, but I think I'd try again. Maybe you should go to driverheaven and download driver cleaner, maybe your version is fubured..it should be doing the job. If thats not it, and you've got your OS patched, and at SP1 and DX9b and your AGP driver up to date before you try to install the catalyst drivers...if thats all correct, I would suspect either an issue with the OS, or a hardware problem if it persists on a fresh install.

Well which would be the best way to reinstall windows?

Well which would be the best way to reinstall windows?

As a last resort option...but a fresh install is generally considered the best, however, you might try a repair install in case its a fubured system file thats preventing the proper installation of the drivers.
