it's a really bad habit.
You should not drink only when you are really thirsty, otherwise you probably don't reach 1.5 liters but drinking too much makes you lose electrolytes.
Also if you keep the bottle near you and drink all the time, if you go out and it's hot you'll always need your bottle or you'll feel like you're dying.
You need to reach an equilibrium.
Sipping all day is also bad for your stomach.

I drink a lot of water just because I want to reduce the risk of developing kidney stones.

I was always told that once you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated.

that's the old boyscout motto if I'm not mistaken.

every time I hear the word "kidney stone" I immediately pound dozens of ounces of water

They say to do this often. That it's good for your kidneys and body in general. I often do at works simply because I drink so much water there, nervous habit I've long had. However if I do this I'm going to the bathroom every 20 mins! WTH.

I remember reading this on some weird website in HS and figured it wasn't true once I noticed that drinking beer caused me to piss clear.

Meh, I drink between 6 and 8 liters of water every day and I do about an hour of cardio and I haven't had any issues.

Drinking until your pee is clear is an exaggeration of the good rule to drink more water if your urine is very dark or has a strong odor.
If I do this I'm going to the bathroom every 20 mins!
I hope that's stretching the truth. At least make a habit of eating something salty at lunch if you're going to drink that much.

True fact from the borderlands: Pedialyte is preferred by illegals crossing the desert a billion to one over Gatorade.

Gatorade is barf-in-a-bottle.

Didn't know that, but I guess it makes sense. I've always maintained that Pedialyte is an important part of this complete rough hangover regimen.

Ginger snaps, some Pedialyte, moderate exercise then a quick nap. Then it's all good, but I'll keep drinking Pedialyte until I pee clear.

Nothing beats partying with medics though! Lost track of time on a bender and have to punch in soon? Well Mr. Low Sodium Cocktail will bring you back to the now in like 3 minutes flat!

Anyway, I've read in more than one book on diet theory (macrobiotic and such) that your urine should be the color of light beer (hey look an enforced stereotype!). Too much water can be harmful, but depending on recent lifestyle choices or certain bodily conditions a "boost" in hydration can be helpful. Chinese and Ayervedic medicine practitioners will remind you to drink plenty of water during a cleanse for a reason.

I hate hearing people repeat the age old advice of "You should always drink 8 glasses of water a day." Male and female physiology differ on water treatment lets say, and as well all know there is a huge difference in weight on average. Ok, maybe not in Wisconsin, but you get my point - how can a 125lb female require the same as a 240lb male? Or the reverse?

I think the one I heard that makes the most sense is body weight x 2 = total ounces per day. A formula I can rarely achieve.

1/2 your body weight in ounces of water = the rule of thumb. if your pee is clear, neat. if not, neat. doesn't really matter, as long as it isn't dark or cloudy.

I was hospitalized for dehydration once (I actually had a blood clot, but the dehydration was what kept me in the hospital for 36 hours, since the clot was in a superficial vein)... since then, I just try to stick with my 64 ounces/day and use dark urine + dry mouth / cracked lips as my dehydration warning signs.

I tend to almost always drink from my 16-ounce usable water bottle... figure I'm good if I can empty it out once in the morning on my way to work, twice while I'm actually at work, and then again after I get home.

for some reason i get dehydrated fast adn often. yes i drink plenty of water.

i have a refillible water bottle that i fill up once before lunch/with lunch/before dinner/and before bed. i also have it by my bedside table since i will wake up wanting a drink at night. i usually finish it by morning.

I also keep a big bottle of pedialyte in the fridge. i got hooked on it when my daughter was younger and got sick. the stuff is amazing.

Drinking this much is a total myth, even for athletes. Drinking ad libitum has been shown in studies to be all that's necessary. Color of urine is a terrible gauge of hydration. Lore of Running, a voluminous book on the sport, covers this in more dept than in this thread, I guarantee it.
