Drifting

Despite the fact that everyone seems to love making fun of drifting, its pretty hard to say these guys dont have skill..

That is some impressive driving
 
Drifting is usually not the fastest way to take a curve, but I admit it takes a considerable amount of skill to pull off well. Now rally/loose surface, drifting is a way of life, and indeed the fastest way to get down the course. Indeed many times you see the cars barely holding traction in a straight line. Real hard-surface track racing, you'll rarely if ever see drifting because it is absolute hell on tires as well as a huge leech on speed.

It's funny how many muscle car and American only car types view drifting as some retarded Fast and the Furious thing imports do (and ricers try to do), but they love doing burnouts and donuts and doing power slides in their muscle cars, which is basically the same shit :awe:

How can you love burnouts and donuts and sliding the rear end out, but not like drifting, an entire auto sport built around doing never ending "donuts" and burnouts around a course?

I made a "U turn" with my right foot the other night, after pulling up along side the ATM drive trough from the side lane and having to flip 180 in tight space (275 front tires = no turning radius). Of course it was 11pm and no other cars in the parking lot 😀 Nothing like a telegraphing bumpsteered IRS and responsive throttle with scalpel precision.

^^ Great points. Yeah for sheer fun breaking traction is near the top of the list in pure entertainment value, whether it be scratching the tires hard on launch and 1-2, 2-3 (and my lord, dare I say 3-4 shifts? I've never been in something that powerful) shifts, power slides, etc. Actual time attack laps on good race courses like Laguna Seca are probably a lot more exhausting and less immediately rewarding.

Yeah, I think muscle cars and drifting go well together - look at some of the newer drift cars: Mustangs, Vipers, Camaros, GTOs, etc...

I don't know of any real professional import drift cars using engines that small 😛

Most are at least 3L and RWD with 400+ WHP.

The first time "drifting" in my 280Z, I left off the gas and it snapped back around, nearly breaking my arm. :awe:

I was watching the Japanese competitions on SPEED and they took time out to talk to the mechanics why they use a specific engine in their cars. They basically were running 3 engines: SR20, 13B, and 2JZ. so 2.0L, 1.3L, and 3.0L.

That's the Japanese* drifters.
 
Those SR20s and Mazda Rotaries are almost certainly boosted enough to get 300hp+ out of them though, if the cars are in Drift competitions. Too little power and you bog out of the drift too easily due to the tires slowing down and actually gripping hard.

SR20 and 13B are "special" engines though 😉 From what I've seen a lot of them are running stroked 2JZ, RB26, VQ35 class stuff, and even cramming in Toyota/Lexus V8s.

I tried this once. I gave a lot of gas in second to my Mustang and slid around a corner and lost control and kinda stopped by hitting the side of the tires against the curb.

Needless to say, that was the day where I decided not to try to go fast when/after it has just rained with balding tires. :awe:

I love watching those ricers crash and I love it when Scions in fart cans pull up next to me. So much amateur/wannabe drifting fail on youtube, I love it.

Hahaha yeah the announcers are insanely hilarious. I want to capture part of that commentary where they wreck and have it as some appropriate windows sound : "WHOOOAOAAAAA SUGOICRASHOH!!!!!!"

Indeed the + is lived up to with most of those modded SR20s, I am just seeming to see that 300hp or so seems to be the bare limit for an acceptable basic drift performance. It looks like for the epic drifting on bigger/stickier tires (where they stay almost sideways for a long time at high speed) you'd really want a lot more power on tap than just 300hp 🙂

Lol "sugoi" = "cool". Japanese announcers get just as excited over crashes as NASCAR announcers, it's like the big moment of the event that everyone was hoping for.
