IMHO you'd be better off getting it for $49 at amazon.com, they ship way faster, plus you'll more likely get a pre-oct 2000 version. I ordered from them 3 days ago and got two made in Japan, oct 99 versions.

I think that this might be the new price of these till they are all gone. Picked up three of them yesterday (all June 2000 builds). Will make nice Christmas presents.

Why are the pre-Oct 2000 versions better than current DC's?

Assuming you guys are talking about just the console and controller for $49.99, they had a huge stack of them at the Toys R US in Lynnwood, WA (For $49.99). I would assume they have the same deal at all the TRUS b&m's. I snagged the last 2K1 Sports Pack Dreamcast for $69.99 at the local KBToys.

Also, (while we're on it) Target B&M has a bunch of Dreamcast games for cheap also. I picked up 102 Dalmations for $9.99 and some motorcycle game for $6.90. They also had Sonic 2 for $29.99. Now it's off to buy.com to pick up the extra controllers.....

Cool, I'm dropping by bestbuy soon. I hope to find one pre Oct, 2000. It seems to be the trendy date to have.. ;)

FYI, Sega has announced an official price drop to $49 for the Dreamcast consoles for the holiday season... so as of now, most major retailers should already be selling the consoles at $49...

I just picked up a CD player that I ordred online. there was no shipping, and the tax I had to pay was 4%. The normal sales tax here is 8.25%. I'll be doing in store pickups for anything I purchase from bestbuy from now on.

<< Is thr date on the outside of the box? >>

It's on the console, but you could see the date through a hole on the box.

Wait, I thought October 2000 was OK. I thought it was November 2000 and newer that were bad. Which is it? I just bought a Oct. 2000 one from Best Buy. I hope it will work with "backup copies" of games. Anyone know for sure?

tourette,

If you ever discuss "backup copies" of games on our forums again, it will be your last post on AnandTech.

Buy the games! How cheap can you get? You buy a darn good console for $49 and you don't want to pay for the media? :| I'm into file-sharing like everybody else, but when it comes to transferring 1GB games, give it up and just pay the $10-15 for each used title.

I called around to a couple of KB Toys this evening and they are all out (no surprise). I went to Best Buy and all the games on special for $7.99 were out and the free GT game that is supposed to come with the Dreamcast console was out as well.

Anyway.. I then went over to Toys R Us for the hell of it and they had a package similar to KB Toys with the 3 sports games and console for $69.99. The consoles were behind the counter and I asked the guy to let me see one. I noticed that there is a square cutout in the back to show the serial number and manufacturers date on the machine. The first one that I looked at was dated Dec 2000. Heh. I then asked the sales guy to see another one (he had no idea why). This second one was also dated Dec 2000. I then asked him to see a third one in the middle of the pile (as he was scratching his head). The third one was data July 2000. I thought to myself. Great! I then thought about it a bit and decided to go ahead and buy it. I had forgotten what was packaged with the KB Toys deal, so I didn't know for sure if it was a good deal or not. I figured that this deal gave me the 3 games and that was probably pretty good. I figured that I could always return it if I find out that it's not a deal or if I find another deal later. The only thing is that Toys R US will not take back an opened game set, so I have to make sure that I want this thing before I open it. I don't have a problem with that. I'm going to learn as much as I can now about the Dreamcast system before I actually commit to it here. I know.. I'm being very miserly here.. ;)

Well.. Does this sound like a decent deal? The Dreamcast game console with one controller and the three sports games for $69.99? That's only $20 more than the BB deal without any games. I know that I don't get the extra controller or VMU like in the KB deal, but that deal is over. Besides, I know that I have a pre November 2000 unit, so that has to be a good thing if I want to make copies of my games and run them off of a cdr instead.

BTW.. Where are these $10-$15 games that I keep hearing about? Where's a good place to buy used titles? FS/FT forum? Now that Sega is blowing these things out though, I think the market for used titles is probably going to either dry up or the games are going to go up because of the increase in demand. I don't know..

Also, what other accessories should I look at getting? Where should I look at buying these accessories?

Thanks.. I can't believe that I finally bought a game console. Heh.

My Best Buy in Vernon Hills, IL had about 5 systems left. 2 of them were out on the floor and had been opened for some reason. The rest were sort of stashed underneath the grates that hold the games. Kind of strange if you ask me. All the sale games were out and the free game wasn't in site.

The Vernon Hills Toys R US had a very good stock on the regular game and the game set with the 3 sports games. I didn't even catch the price on just the game console. I guess that I should have.

From what I'm reading, it sounds like I got a decent deal for $69.99 and that I got lucky to find the store well stocked with Dreamcast consoles.

I think the official price for the dreamcast sports pack(w/the 3 2k1 games) is now $69.99. My local KB toys was advertising that price and Circuit City was also selling the sportspack for the same price. I had purchased my DC sportspack from that Circuit City less than 2 weeks ago for $99.99. Anyway, I went in to ask for their 30 day low price guarantee and they credited my credit card the $30 difference, so I am happy.:) My DC is a July 2000 one.

Yes, the sports bundle is a very good deal: 3 games for an added $20. I bought another Dreamcast today at BB as a gift, but it's just a sole $49 console...couldn't find anymore bundled DCs.

In terms of buying games, I've used FS/FT, half.com, eBay, BB B&M, GameStop B&M, KBToys B&M...wherever I can find a deal. I've acquired 18 games for about $250. Many were new in shrinkwrap, too. The most expensive game I bought was Skies of Arcadia for $21.99 at half.com, but I managed to use a $5 coupon that was available to all customers.

Sal,

$70 is a great price for that sports package. I got mine back in August for $100. Just a note, you can't actually burn original DC games because they are a different format than cdrom. Having a pre Oct console allows you to play games that have been ripped and hacked into cdrom format.

Thanks for the help on the 3000Z a few months ago. I went with a package you suggested. Just got the lens adapter and a cheap filter.

I got the $49 Dreamcast at BestBuy B&M. They had like 30 of them. I got a Sept 2000 DC. The stock of good games was low though.

I recall someone saying they bought Virtua Fighter3 for $9.99... Where can I get it for that cheap? I've love to own that for that low of a price!

Any game recommendations? RPG.. Fighting.. Racing..

i picked one of these up the other day. I had a $30 gc from my birthday that I used to buy this, another controller and 2 vmus. I have a *cough*newsgroup*cough* connection that can be used for games. My brother picked one up for 79 a few months ago, and I would have paid that for this console, easily. The best buy I went to on Friday was not packed, and there was a stack of about 50 or more sitting there. They were already sold out of Sega GT, so I didn't get that. but even without it, it's a great deal.
