Dream Theater Music Contest

If you don't know who Dream Theater is, they are the progressive rock band that took the torch from Rush about 8 years ago. They are of the utmost caliber of musicians. Their piano player got into Julliard at age 9! Anyways, they have a new cd coming out in about a month, so they decided to release the song structure charts to their website and have a contest to see who could write the best song. Folks, these entries are amazing. I highly suggest taking a listen to see what these artists have made. Linky

oh yeah, today's the deadline, isnt it? I forgot all about that! I definitely have to listen to these entries tonight! thanks!

naw, I'm a big rush fan too. They grew up listening to Rush but just ended up being a little better. Rush still rulez, but DT is a phenomenon.

dream theatre sucks ass completely. i laugh when i hear them.
You know nothing about music then. Granted, I can understand if people don't like the singer, he is not my favorite, but to say the band sucks ass completely is blasphemy. There are only a handful of people on earth that can come close these guys. And it is rare to find such talent in one band.

I don't like the direction DT has taken with their later albums, but they are still a good band. Just not as good

You sound like a DMB fan boy. Not everyone likes every band, and just b/c they don't like them means jack about their knowledge of music. Get off your high horse. Dream Theater isn't the be-all end-all. There's been much better and there will continue to be much better. I don't fault people for disliking DT any more than I fault people for liking DMB.

Dream theatre is the musical equivalent of a circle jerk.
I'm a 'musician' and I think its ridiculous music.
I prefer musicians like bach or chopin, who can use their digusting talent to make MUSIC, rather than 8 minute crapfests.

What band has been better? I'm curious cause I'd like to go listen.

Well I wouldnt knock someone if they said they didn't like dream theater because they are over done (aka wank fest) because I can see that in their music. But to say they suck ass is blasphemy.

8 Minute crapfest? Thats a ridulous statement. They make a lot of good music. I love Bach, and I am studying his inventions right now. (2 part bass study). Personally, his inventions aren't any more wanking that DT. They are very repetive and start to sound the same. I dunno, I just hear more challenge in DT.

Where do you get the idea I am on a High Horse?

Whats funny is Rudess is a Chopin master, which is what you say you prefer. Sorry but I have to fault you for saying DT isn't music. Thats stupid.

I'll assume that Rudess is their keyboard player... Being a Chopin master and attending juliard is great and all, but technical genuis != good music.
My problem with dream theater is that it sounds exactly like what it is... a bunch of technical masters writing unnecessarily complicated songs. I can write a crap-metal riff in 9/8, but who cares if its not good? The only people I know who listen to this crap are technical wizards at their own instrument, and I understand the attraction in their playing ability.... but the song-writing isn't good, the singing is absolutely ridiculous, and the music is so blatantly esoteric its offensive to me...

I prefer to listen to artful masters, such as victor wooten or doyle dykes.... dream theatre lacks 'soul' in my opinion. I can listen to music because of its technical ability, but I probably won't listen to it again unless its done in an artistic way. ...When I listen to bach I'm not listening for how impressive it is technically, I'm hearing the melody and its progression.

well amc, i can actually respect that response because you didnt just throw out "they suck ass". DT "is" music, but I can say that you are right. I'm pretty damn good at guitar (not the best) but my enjoyment from DT is keeping up with them. It keeps me on my toes and pushes my talents and techniques. Now when I sit down to write music, its nothing like DT. I can put soul into my music, and so true, that is something I feel is looked over by the band for sake of technical showmanship. But that is why I listen to them.

Regardless, I find most of their music fun to listen to. I absolutely love Victor Wooten, but I must say, alot of the stuff I like of his is on the showmanship, techie side of things, not necessarily the groove stuff. But I do love it when him and CB from DMB work together.

Crap metal riffs in 9/8, i agree, I have heard alot of this in some of the nu-metal where they are trying to be Math-metal. Most the time, it does not go over very well, and the time changes are very abrubt. This is why I like DT, because they can make odd changes flow through without grinding.
