If you had a chance to design your dream case...how would it be?

How would you like it to look like? (Finish?)
What features would you like to see?

If your dream case already exists--point it out.

Let it all out!

I personally have bought two in all my life.

The 3dcool Tornado 1000 and just a couple of weeks ago the Gigabyte 3dAurora Silver.
One thing I wish they had was a standard connection between motherboard and case. One fits all kind of deal and not have to read the map and connect accordingly.
I would also like easier access to the components without sacrificing dust protection.
The high speed pc (HSPC) looks nice but it is exposed to dust.

Thin for short video cards, with one entire side devoted to aluminum fins for a heatpipe cpu cooler (passive would be nice), one hard drive bay, front USB/firewire/audio, 400w PSU, mATX, 2 80mm fan ports, 1 cdrom bay, no floppy bay, anodized finish (blue, red, etc...) or british racing green. If I ever get enough time and money I might make such a thing.

Integrated cables; You plug in ONE power cable from the PSU into the case, then the case has retractable powercords in different locations to help prevent messy wiring.

A CM Stacker 810 with the black anodized aluminum finish (exterior and interior) just like a Lian li, with dual rear 120mm exhaust fans (no more than 22 dBA, with three pin power cords), dual top 120mm fans for possible water cooling, one front 120mm fan, and all 5.25" bays with perforated drive covers, with the psu at the bottom.

The Antec P180 with the addition of silicon-rubber sound dampeners for all the 5.25" drives and all the case-mounted fans. It should also have it's VGA duct redesigned a little to make it easier to work with and less intrusive -- good idea but with suboptimal implementation. Antec should have included shrouds to block the VGA duct and top openings for people who don't want to use them. I like the front door exactly the way it is, making it all metal would just make the case noisier and heavier without making it appreciably sturdier. Contrary to popular belief, I do not find the door to be flimsy. Then I'd make it just a little larger so that working inside and cable management would be a tad easier.

I find fascinating Shadowknight's thoughts about having power cables integrated into the case. It could be like a modular PSU with the connections for the cables moved from the PSU itself to various places around the case. Somebody ought to do that! Cool.

In all honesty, the case that I have right now (Enermax FS2300). I searched for about 2 years to find something like this (and then took about 8 months to actually get a hold of one). I ended up buying it directly from the manufacturer, and not a single web site online had it. Originally I wanted the 19-bay version, but all they had was the 23-bay one, so I got it right then.

Damped steel construction (i.e. pre-applied Dynamat) /w built-in acoustic labyrinths for intake/exhaust airflow
Thumbscrews only (especially for card installation)
Rubber-lined screwless drive rails, hard drive housings aligned vertically instead of the conventional horizontal orientation
Thick reuseable intake fan filters
120mm case fans only, number of intake fans is one greater than number of exhaust fans (higher-than-ambient pressure keeps the dust out)

Dream case for wife's new machine:

P180, 2 5.25" external bays, 3 internal 3.5" bays, no floppy. Or maybe an extended SFF that accepts standard ATX PSUs.

I have a few wishes..

1 - silent
2 - screw-less, secure (no suspension bands) drive mounting
3 - provisions for cable routing
4 - easy case opening, spring loaded thumbscrews like P150, but four, not just two.
5. quality metal fabrication (no shap edges, no screws on aluminum that shred metal bits...)
6. easy access to add/remove parts, like motherboard, cards, drives, power suply
7. Case exterior is not easily damaged by normal use, or by opening / closing the case (X-Qpack window scratches)
8. Standard/significant power supply


I think there is a need for two ideal cases, one med size and one small form factor.

A. The P150. I received one early last week. It would be close to ideal if it did not fail the noise test. As it is... I just hope Antec fixes it.

B. Like the Aria. I have an Aria, and unfortunatly it fails in many of the above requirements and do not see an easy fix for it. May be the X-QPack could be improved, manufactured better, etc..

The P150 but without the cheap paint that flakes off. Real paint would be nice. Also without the crappy stealth bays that arent big enough for Pioneer DVD burners.

BTX, the dimensions of a hefty reciever, and black satin finish with a minimum of lights, buttons, and no front panel plugs.

That's a very interesting idea. :light:

My idea for an ideal case would be one that uses a mATX motherboard, since nicely overclockable ones are now available (ABOUT TIME) and that form factor nicely fills in between the real SFF ones and the full ATX with almost all the expandability. There are some cases on the market that have design elements that I like, but none that is 100% what I would invision.

1) Elegant with rounded edges and stealthed drives - no door, and in black.
2) Quality construction with great front-back ventilation (no side panel holes), filter and 120mm fans.
3) suspended drive bays.
4) Standard ATX PSU, though Shadowknight's idea is intriguing I've always been a fan of "standardized."
5) No stamped fan grills - full cutouts with finger guards.
