Save before you mess with any Glass Phylactory's early in the game.

Definitely seconded, absolutely, and especially so from the Normal difficulty, because it can be dealt with relatively safely on Easy... but from Normal the difficulty goes sky high, unless the party consists of three Mages and some formidable tank character, of course.

For those who want cheapest (infinite) ingredients,
Dalish camp merchant offers cheapest elfroot.
Mage's circle merchant is only source for lyrium.
Bartender in Denerim market district offers cheapest flasks, and concentrator/distillation agent.

In general, the more mages the easier things will be. The strongest party might be 3 mages+DPS rogue. 1 of the mages can tank w/ AW spec. This way you have amazing CC+healing+group DPS from the mages and the rogue can provide high single target DPS.

On Normal: beat my first glass phylactory fight with no mages at lvl 15/16. Just a ton of warrior damage :D
Still going (fairly) strong using Melee 95% of the time. I've used Morrigan for a few tough fights or when i was tired of an area, but mostly sten, oghren and either alistair/mabari/leliana. More blood!

I don't know how to do the spoiler thing...i have a question about an encounter in Denerim...

GODLESS:
Travel to Brecilian Forest Dalish Camp for unlimited plant materials like Elfroot :)

Thanks for the tip about Elfroot at the Dalish camp. I've only just been there for the first time so I'll need to take care of
the werewolves
first.

Some more tips:
One of the early NPCs that join your party starts with 2 levels of Herbalism.

There is a simple mod that adds an unlimited storage chest to your camp.

You need poison Tier 1 to use any of the poisons and bombs - As long as you have Tier 1, you can use ANY level poison/bomb. At Tier 1 you can only craft the simple ones though. Same goes for Traps.

Or DO you?

I'd like to "take care of" the warewolves leader if you know what I mean. :sneaky:

My main was a warrior and getting my healing mage LATE in the game was a mistake. If/when i replay she will be the first addition.

Question with a SPOILER WARNING:

Is there any way to deal with Redcliffe where Conner and the mother are both ok? I didn't want to kill Conner and thought I was folowing a quest instruction that would not kill the mother by going to the circle of mages, but it killed the mother anyway. And then Allistaire got all pissy about it later with like -24 to his favor.

While I'm at it, what are all the 'lyrium veins' in the fade for? They don't seem to do anything when I click them.

Did anyone else find a need to use custom tactics to get npc's to drink health and mana potions when they get low? Mine were just getting killed or standing around out of mana until I added tactics.

Is there any way to get the revenrend mother to let you have stem(?) if you don't have coercion (and I don't care to get her upset with threats anyway)?

Not sure where you did wrong but going to the mages is the way to save them both.

Lyrium veins recharge your MP and at least some HP if you "use" them during combat. THey can be pretty useful during boss fights.

You can micromanage your characters to drink potions when needed..

As for freeing "Sten", I think having Leliana in your party might help.

Continuation of spoiler question)

Thanks; but I find it pretty hard (at least on the PS3) to switch chars and manually drink potions whenever they need them.

On Redcliffe, maybe it's because I went to Redcliffe first? I don't remember seeing anythig at the circle of mages about the Redclioffe siituation.

In order to get the mages to help you the situation as the tower has to be resolved. Afterwards, you can ask the leader for assistance.

You don't have to do the tower before Redcliff to save both. The option comes up after Jowan suggests using his blood magic, if you refuse to let him use blood magic. Even if it doesn't, I'd expect as long as you don't actually initiate the ritual using Jowan's magic or kill the child, Morrigan will mention it if you ask her about it in camp.

Yea but who wants to save both of them; kill all those rich fancy pants.

Based on the type and number of tips in this thread, I can conclude one of two things:
1. The manual and in game demo/training are shit.
2. The manual and in game demo/training are excellent, but people choose to ignore them because they are stupid bastards.

So, which is it?

Neither. The manual is adequate and there are tons of in game tips. But the game is enormous in scope and there is a lot to learn. It's easy to miss things.

Can't stand her..

Regarding Wynne.

Well there are at least two ways to kill Wynne, one is right when you meet her in the Mages tower, the other and I just found this out lastnight, if you choose to side with the crazies in Haven, and pour the blood on the ashes of Andraste, she will join up with the Guardian to attack you and you have to kill her.

Wasn't expecting that, but a fun twist. Now we'll see if I can beat the game without a healer.

so i've played up to Ostagan as each class and I guess I prefer the warrior class. I always play warriors in RPG games though and I want to play something else, but I get slaughtered with the other classes.

Maybe its because I'm still in the beginning but when I played the mage and the rogue, the enemy always attacks me, so I can't get behind him or stay back and cast spells.

The problem with picking Warrior is that there are three warriors (and two pseudo-warriors, Dog and Shale) in this game, while there are only two mages and two rogues. That's a 5:2:2 ratio, which is HORRID.

No. All items, unless equipped, are placed in a pool for all characters to use.

Dragging a potion from this pool onto multiple characters item bars (quick use) will take a potion from the same stack when used.

-edit- If you have a chest you want to only place X number of items from a stack in, press the shift key while click & dragging the item. -reedit- or it does it automatically, I forget.

Also note there are simple small mods that will add a chest to your main camp so you do not need the wadren's keep DLC to have a chest to store items in. I used this one http://social.bioware.com/project/463/

that mod has been removed. or something is up because i can't get the zip

Shale does have a couple of area effect spells though. Especially Rock Barrage which is very useful and lasts for freaking ages.
