I'm still mixed about this game. It has a dumbed down, consolitus feel to it, not to mention a pervading EA stench on it.
I lost interest in Dragon Age as soon as it was revealed that it wouldn't have online multiplayer nor allow custom content. I hope they restore all of that for DA2, but I doubt it. I'm sure they've decided to fully consolize it.
Why is everything so dumb these days?
Because the majority of the gaming market is adults with better things to do than deal with the tedium of a complicated RPG.
UHH WHAT!!
The sheer thought of getting to bang Morigan again makes me uh.
Wait im going to find some tissue.
AHHH much better!!!!!

Sex scenes in videogames make me feel like such a creep. All it ends up being is ham-handed innuendo followed by a couple of shots of sideboob/sideass then a couple more lines of innuendo alluding to how good you fucked her.
I don't really think Dragon Age was dumbed down compared to BG. Yes, everybody gets rezzed after every fight, but that just saves you from going all the way to the town and back if you can't rez, which was extremely annoying in BG and other older RPGs. This also allowed them to make every fight an epic battle that could wipe your party, rather than fighting a bunch of trash mobs and then a hard boss.
The party size was reduced to 4, but IMO battles are actually MORE complex than BG2 because every class has numerous abilities at their disposal, not just magic classes. In BG2 combat classes mostly just hack n slashed. Also the abilities are balanced much better (In BG2 at least half the spells/abilities were useless) and due to the mana system you're must less restricted on what you can use. In BG2 I ended up not using some of the more interesting spells much because I wanted to save those slots for the heavy hitting DPS spells.
Are games ever going to get around to explaining why you go around recruiting a dozen people to help you fight the ultimate evil, but you can only take 3-4 of them with you to storm the castle?

Well, in NWN2, you had to divide your party between defending Crossroad Keep, dealing with surgical strikes from the Shadow Army, and those that would accompany you into the enemy strong hold.![]()
Actually in NWN2 you did get your entire cast of friends to fight the final battle.
As for the combat in DA:O, I thought the system was designed quite well. The main problem why the combat was boring and easy was due to bad level/monster design. Pretty much every battle consisted of the same group of the same enemies and using the same tactics. They need more enemy variety and combinations. My second main complaint was that playing a mage felt like playing a mage in WoW, you were a ranged/aoe attacker but you weren't uber powerful or anything. In that regard I prefer BG2 where at high levels, mages were godly powerful. With all of the cast speed increasing items and the quicken ability you could fight like Irenicus, chain casting spell after spell, which was super fun.
Wut? Mages were the most powerful class in the DA. They could control masses of enemies while nuking them at the same time.
