Is it your job to fix Dr. XXX's computer? If it isn't, find an excuse to avoid looking at it. I've found that the words "security audit" or "down production server" work well for excuses.

If it IS your job to fix it, get to work and stop whining about it :)

By saying "can we run a spyware scan" she means "have someone come over here and run a spyware scan."

I also hate it when people phrase their request like that.

I guess garbage collectors know that their job sucks and they are tough, whereas IT support... well, nevermind. ;)

In all fairness, it's an extremely miserable and thankless job. I don't know much about garbage collecting, but I've been a support guy and a network admin in previous lives. It SUCKS. The only time people ever talk to you is if they're pissed off. You basically see the least tolerant and most miserable side of everyone day in and day out.

It's like doing collections except it pays more and you can read people's email.

On top of that, you have to keep your guard up 24 x 7. Failure to do so will result in some asshole sending out a mass email to the whole company blaming you for the kiddie pr0n that was found on his laptop.

I guess that's understandable in any job. We all whine. We just read more about IT support here because of the nature of the forum so I suppose that makes it seem a lot more frequent than it really is.

Garbage men deal with trash as to IT guys. The garbage men don't have to deal with trash that talks back though. Hence why IT guys complain.
