Personally, I like my physicians to be a little more serious & too busy to bleach his hair.

Yeah, Tom was out of line here. Personally, I like how some tech sites switched over to national news on 9-11, when most of the other news sites were down. I couldn't get to most of the major news web sites due to such a high demand, so I ended up getting most of my online news that day from Slashdot. Sure it was strange, but it was one of the few sites that I could get to.

Nothing out of line. Do you remember what it was like? I remember having 59 channels of news for day afterward. Every single f-ing radio had news and papers published entire publications featuring only the attacks.

The next day I was already tired of all this stuff.

I'm not sure how to feel about Tom's article. I love the inside information, the hardware site background - it's like a real life soap opera! - but on the other hand I absolutely can't stand his personal attacks.
When he started off saying those guys were the two people he despised the most, I couldn't believe my eyes, I think writing such stuff is totally inappropriate in a non-personal environment. You can say such stuff when you're talking to friends in ICQ, but you don't write it, not even in an editorial, as a head editor of a huge, influential hardware site.
Van's response is just beyond words, of course, he totally kills of any credibility with that, it's way worse than Tom's editorial. Kyle's reaction on the other hand is extremely laudable, he makes a very good impression.
Note that all of these assessments are about the niveau ("matureness" or "professionalism" if you want) of the people involved, I don't know about the quality and unbiasedness of the sites themselves. I know I've visited THG for a long time, it was probably the first hardware review site I saw, but as with anything on the net, I take the reviews with a grain of salt and try to get more opinions by reading other sites.

And Van responds

Kyle has already said in the forums that he won't give Tom the traffic from a front page link. I do wonder if tom acts like an ass for the "ratings" sometimes......

Tom has been a prick for a long time. He had a run-in with one of the members here because of some assholish behavior, and then he compounded it by making a personal attack on that member.

Reading Kyle's responses in the thread at HardForum and Van's response . . . well, let's just say both of them show a heck of a lot more professionalism and maturity than the good doctah.

You've got to be kidding me. Kyle's isn't bad, but Van's is a complete disgrace. In it, he calls Tom a racist and implies he's gay. That's "professionalism and maturity?"

Who cares, they are all a bunch of idiots. First of all why would we take anything seriously published on HardOCP in the first place. When they are not discussing how to score with chicks, or how tight the latest cpu to his peeps, they 'might' have something relevant. HardOCP is the New York post of the digital world.

Oh, and Tom in his silk pajamas smoking French cigarettes telling sex stories at 3 AM in the Grand Hyatt-Taipei... Was that a pass, Tom? You really creeped me out that night, which is why I ran out of your room.

Now that's funny

Germans are like that. Read "Journey to the Center of the Earth" by Jules Verne. See how he describes the professor, whilst very smart, he was short tempered and arrogant. Tom is only short tempered and arrogant, not smart, a good propagandist at best.
Fsck the Germans. Heil Shitler...

Thankyou, and goodbye. You won't be coming back to AT.

How can anyone say Tom is honest? Was it honest to remove all of Smith's bylines and replace them with his own?

Herr Pabst, the Tuetonic twit?ZZZZZZ! Like he's someone that's important to anyone besides himself. It's amazing that he actually thinks he's a person who should be recognized beyond some dink who has a following of Pencil Necked Geeks sexually aroused over Computer Hardware. Honestly, who gives a rat's ass what he thinks of Van Smith, Kyle Bennent or Americans? A bum sleeping in a trash bin's
opinion is of the same worth.

My problem with this article is not that I think Tom is wrong, but that he posts crap like this at all. I admire Anand's ability to stay objective and refrain from participating in all these soap-box flame wars. That is the big reason I always read AT first and trust AT the most. It is one of the few hardware sites on the internet that actually sticks to the hardware and doesn't go off on tangents about their "enemies". I would read Tomshardware and others a lot more if they would show a little professionalism.

i USED to be a big fan of toms site. i used to frequent there even before he was as popular as he is today.

But some of the stuff posted was biased to the point i lost all respect i had for him. though when i do upgrade i tend to see what he has to say about the motherboard, cpu, or videocard i want. there has been more then a few times when i looked at his site and he had a review that was oppisete all other sites i have looked at.

Though it is sad to see him act like this but its not the first and i doubt the last.

Yep. Van may not be much better than Tom when it comes to this situation, but it was Tom who started this, and if I remember correctly, this is not the first time he has been whining online.

I agree. I think Tom has done more the hardware review side of the internet than a lot of others. I've read hardocp, and once and a while Vans, but when I want detailed benchies, I still go to Toms. They always have good comparisons that I'm interested in. For example, when a new video card comes out, they always have the previous 1 or 2 generations being benchmarked with the new stuff. It helps to see what the performance differences really are. AT doesnt consistantly have that info. :Q:(

ASCII and ye shall RECEVII. ;)

I haven't had time to read the all of Tom's blurb, but I've scanned through a lot of it. He's a strange bird, but in this case, I think he has some valid points about the fudged tests. One weird aspect of this is, if I recall correctly (this is from memory), I think Tom has also been caught with his leiderhosen down, cooking the books on some tests on behalf of a sponsor, but I don't have the time to research the accuracy of that.

Tom's not a dumb guy. He knows some sh8. The sad thing is, as usual, he's put his ego so far in front of everything that it gets in the way of whatever value there is in the facts he presents.

For clarification, the situation between Tom and myself arose because he posted some blatantly anti-American statements. My own experience with German friends is that, because of the grammar and syntax of the German language, if a German tries to translate into English, and he is not careful, what comes out can sound terrible, regardless of what he intended to say.

Initially, I thought this was what had happened. I had some previous, friendly contact with Tom because I pointed out a problem in one of his article, and he posted my comments and suggestions, so when I e-mailed him that I questioned the wisdom of his statements. I also reminded him that I was a friendly source. His subsequent e-mails to me showed me that it was no accident. He flamed and fumed about American this and that, and showed a nasty Eurocentric and egotistical attitude, so I gave him until the next day to post a retraction, or I would post his messages to me on the web. I told him it wouldn't be my words that would hang him; it would be his.

He didn't. I did. :) I lost count of the number of other forums where I saw reposts of those e-mails.

Then, on his own site, he tried to deny that he had sent them to me and called me a liar for saying he did. There was just this small probelm of having the originals with his IP addresses, time stamps, routing codes, etc. Of course, he wasn't about to post any reply from me, but there was this thing called the Internet, and forums, oh my...
