hey guys...w/ this influx of new members, new problems resolved, and the such i've decided its time for the guide to be updated!!

Let me know how these additions sound! If they sound good i'll grab the old guide, and edit these in the appropiate area and then get wolfsraider to update the online guide :)

Thanks for your input!!

[Why does the client Instantly Crash upon running it, no matter which version (background, graphical, command-line)]
-If you use winzip to unzip the file and you have not indicated for WinZip to set the options to "Use folder names" then a crash will result
The reason for this is that the "lattices" directory will not write, or populate, upon unzipping. Without the lattices directory an instant
crash will result.

[Will there be a linux client?]
-More than likely NO. While this is a big hit and a drawback for many, nothing can be done about this.

[Does DPAD have problems with Windows 98]
-It works fine for some people while a rare few notice stability problems.
-This is probably due to another setting elsewhere and not the OS itself.

[Should i always hop onto the latest version once it is released?]
-As the client is still in beta phase the roll-out of a new client version is beta unto itself. A good method is to run it, if it runs fine
then you are good to go! If not switch back to your old version (making sure to copy over ur results.txt and results.dat) and go to the
DPAD forums and post for Stephen. Usually he responds the same day. Once again the link to the main site is www.stephenbrooks.org/muon1

[Do i have to put a different user name for every pc?]
-No just put [TA]your-name-goes-here in the user.txt file on every pc and your good to go!

[Will killing the client ruin any current "run" being simulated?]
-The client automatically saves every few minutes but this can be changed by going into config.txt and setting the "auto-save" to less (in seconds)
-So if it is set to auto-save every 4 minutes and you kill the client after 2 minutes from the last save then you have 2 minutes of lost data.

[I see that there are various auto-save directories; why are they there and can i combine them?]
-This is most likely due to you running various different clients; i.e. the background, command-line, and graphical at various times. Each version auto-saves
to a different file. Also, you CANNOT combine them as this would result in the client crashing. Each auto-save is set for one version. When that auto-save
has filled up (i.e. the run has completed and then auto-saved) the result will be written to the results.txt file. Hence, while there are multiple auto-save
files should you choose to run various versions, in the end everything is saved to one file.

~~~~ goes under 3rd party Programs:
Muon Calculator is quite the handy tool for the stats-hungry muon Afficiondo. Just remember to move the decimal spot 1 to the left :)
http://muon.mega-reviews.com/muoncalc.asp
[Can i just use an installer?]
-yes! GtPrOjEcTX created this wonderful installer. Just download the proper client and it does the rest. The default installation is C:/ Program Files/Dpad & once installed the user.txt file comes up w/ "[TA]" already filled in the field. Just add your desired name after this and Save it. After this just proceed to start up one of the versions (background or commandline...or graphical if u would rather see pretty simulations (at a loss of speed))
Muon Installer for NT (requires admin rights): http://www.jiggawatts.com/files/MuonNTInstaller.exe
OK, looking great overall. :D Just one thing, and I contacted Mike about this, some new guys were unshure as how to join TeAm AnandTech, after reading the guide, so Mike edited the guide a bit so it says put [TA] infront of ur username to join the TeAm.
With the new installer, it's much easier, but some people will still use the zip and rar files.
Keep up the great work! :beer::D
Mike = Wolfsraider?
b/c i see this in the guide:
"Open up the user.txt file and type in your desired name,(be sure to put [TA] in front of Your name {i.e. [TA]Overkiller} If you want to join TeAm anandtech)"
dunno if that is from original or if that was edited in?
Either way let me know guys :)
it's really wherever you think the data would fit best!
The part about the new installer could go underneath the blurb on how to manually install it.
And the muoncalculator can go under 3rd party programs..
otherwise the rest i believe can just go in the middle?
up to you :)
make it look nice ;)
and many :beer: for your hard work!
Hey, are you sure about the decimal point in muon calculator? If that is true, then my XP 2600 has only done 4,700 mpts in about 50 hours :confused:
It appears to update correctly whenever I see the CLI finish a WU, I check the difference in muon calculator and it looks to be adding the same amount.
i don't know how to sneakernet =/
what i do know is that you can just take all the various results.txt file and merge them into 1 big file and then send that one out :)
There's one instance when muon calc shows the right number. It is when your current result ends on a "0". When u have 5000 displayed, than it IS 5000. The "move-the-digit" is only necessary if the last digit is a number other than "0" :D
Maybe that applies to your case Scott.
OK this what you want to do: Cut the result.txt file from the pc without the internet connection. Take it to a DPAD pc with internet connection. Rename the current results.txt file to something else, if there is one. Paste the one from the other pc in the muon folder. Manualsend and it's gone! Rename the renamed results.txt back to results.txt and thats it!
Or you could use muonmonitor, go merge results.txt files, select all the verious results.txt files, select the output directory, usually c:\prog...files\muon and give the file a name, usually mergeresults.txt. Rename it to results.txt and manualsend! :D
Pleaze ask if you've got more questions! :D
I tried to contact the creator of Muon Calc in order to ask if he's still developing it or if he might give me the source code if he doesn't, but the email i found isn't valid anymore. Gonna have to look for him in another way now. Gonna keep u guys posted! :D
Ok, I checked Muon Calc, it said I had 57265.7
I watched the CLI finish a WU which showed:
t = 200.00ns (443/58097 particles) 264.4 Mpts
Those added equals 57530.1
I went in and checked Muon Calc, and it also reports 57530.1
Requested changes are made
lmk if there is something you want changed
just a heads up
the links to the other faq's are in disarray.
My sister in law decided to disable all the virus protection etc... on my rig
i was updating the sites when the computer crashed (4 viruses found).I have backups but am still reloading everything after a format.
sites should be back to normal soon (this does not affect the dpad faq) and passwords are enabled to prevent this from reoccuring.
Thanks WolfsRaider!
Looks awesome!
I was wondering if you could add 1 more field?
[Results did not send properly (hung transfer)!! Where are my results?? And how can i prevent this in the future??]
-When sending a result and a hung transfer results (rarely) which forces the user to terminate the transfer your results.txt file is NOT lost. Look in your DPAD folder and one will see a very long filename such as [TA]Overkiller6-204854-32ew-234-343.txt <--- This is your results.txt file (make sure the file size is the same as results.txt; it will be). Simply rename that file to results.txt and try a re-send!
-To avoid this in the future (if it happens every time you try to send a result) enter config.txt and change the "PASV file transfer" field to "Yes."
also..if you could check the spelling and punctuation ;)
Thanks a ton!
Wolfsraider-
I also noticed that the link at the end of this leads you to a 404. While the address is fine the actual link behind it is something like dpad.wolfsraider.www.stephenbrooks.org/muon1
so if possible could u also fix the link?
thanks man!!
