ANANDTECH STAFF NOTE
We are investigating this issue at this time. So far it has absolutely nothing to do with the forums themselves it isn't recreatable consistently and is not affecting everyone. This leads us to believe the problem might be network related. Please be patient, and do not post any more threads about the issue. We'll post here once we find something..

If you have information that might help us track this down please reply to this thread. Things like what kind of error it was (HTTP STATUS CODE) if you know how to get that, what you were doing etc.

Thanks!

Every single time I reply to a thread using the quick reply feature I get the following error:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,
click Detect Network Settings
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

That means you can't find the server... no idea as the servers are fine. I'd need more info to be able to offer any help...

However, the posts still go through fine.

Minendo, doubt it as he has only posted here not replied... very wierd.

The IE error is connection related though, very odd.

He is not the only one having the problems. I get the same issue. but I know that the posts go thoough. I just go back to the original post, and there is my reply. But I get the exact same page. I get it on my PM replys sometimes as well.

wierd it isnt a forum issue though, no error logs indicating anything anywhere and i have yet to see so you guys will have to try and trouble shoot it on your end and see what you come up with

i need a reproducable case to go much further ie happens most of the time with such and such a browser and version etc... if its random its impossible for me to do anything until either a) an error is generated or b) you have a test case that i can see

Cheers

talk to Eli. it seems to happen to him on almost every post.

Is there something you want from us Zuni? I can tell ya the Page can not be displayed error pops almost instantainiously almost like my computer is not sending anything at all. It is like a tenth of a second. It takes 2-3 seconds for a regular AT page to load for me.

I can tell you I do 98% of my posting between 8:30 & midnight Central time on IE 6.0 on the non-subscriber forums. I get the error maybe 1 in 25 times, with no rhyme or reason that I can dicern.

Could the forums have a preset # of connections at any given time, and that limit keeps getting bumped into, so the connection gets tossed?

I have been getting the "random" dps and tps more frequently lately too. Both from here at home and from at work. Both IE6.0 with all the new and old security updates and such- I hardly ever use the quickreply so that isn't a problem for me. I know for sure I only click the box once, and I've just resigned myself to the fact that it's not on my end so I can't do much about it. My system at work is pretty well locked down so I don't get to mess with anything of great importance. Oh, both are windows2000 systems too. Subscriber server and both on DSL lines to the intarweb.

Help at all? Need more info? what?

Oh, and page load times seem a bit sluggish at times but that may be internet traffic as I haven't kept a detailed log of these occurances.

This also happens to me fairly often. I get double or triple posts a good portion of the time when this happens too.

Well, ok, messagepost.cfm uses a 302 to redirect right? I'm trying to see where it points to, but I am not l33t enough. 😉 Almost smells like dns - I *never* have the problem, and I use firebird, so maybe it's a dns problem, but firebird caches dns and thus doesn't experience it? Just a st@b in the dark.

I'm a subscriber, and I'm getting a similar error that occurs when I reply to messages - instead of getting redirected back to the thread after replying, I just get a page cannot be found. Same as BingBongWongFooey

Thanks for the posts, but nothing here leads anywhere yet.

1) there are no errors anywhere in any log files
2) It never happens here on multiple machines ( i posted 200 replies to a thread and not one had an issue )
3) There are no connectivity issues on the servers

Some of you didnt specifiy if you are subscribers or not btw, or if you are all using quick reply etc 🙂 Think of me as a mechanic, if you say "hey, sometimes my car makes a wierd noise" and walk out it won't get us very far.. I need to be able to see it happening or have detailed info about how to make it happen that means everything how you post where you post, on what server (sub/forums), what browser etc. 🙂 As much as you can detail.

Until i get enough info to recreate it or something that points to something specific it remains unsolved...

Evad, nope there are no connection limits anywhere...

Thanks

I never use quick reply, I'm a subscriber, IE6, and BingBongWongFooey's last reply states the rest 🙂 That's all the info that I have, because that's all I know about it 🙁 It happens at random also.

What we need to find out (and only you guys can do it) is where your browser was going when it got a dns error. You can try doing a properties of the page your on etc... I'm guessing somehow randomly you're being redirected either in an invalid format or to an invalid location.. Possibly something with HTTP compression not sure yet.
do all of you have http 1.1 checked in internet options -- > advanced in IE? For those that have it happening all the time try another browser and see if it still exists. Anything to narrow it down helps.

One more thing, can those of you using IE with the issue do this:

Go to IE and hit tools -- > Internet options ---> advanced

Scroll down to "Show Friendly http error messages" and uncheck that so we can try and see whats going on.

I did this and am having no problems making posts. I have had this problem in the past but fixed by deleting my internet and cookie cache.
