What's a good % of the conventional deadlift for trying my first sumo deadlift set?

Just start with a plate. It's a very different movement, you'll likely want to adjust your feet placement until you figure out what's comfortable. If you get a plate and it's easy, just keep going up until it's not.

Bumped up to 365lb

Nice man, was it at the same weight?

I'm going to add people's specific numbers to the original post when I have time. That way it'll be more inspiring to see people of all different sizes succeeding.

So if anyone has updates on their numbers from earlier in this thread, please post the number and weight.

I'll try to weigh in so I know where I'm at. It's been a while but I know I'm not over 180

On 2011-12-21 I was able to DL 275 lbs for 4 reps at roughly 150 lbs BW. 1RM calculator tells me this was 300 lbs for 1 rep equivalent. Does this count? 😉

Last I really checked 455lb @ ~197lbs. I've been too inconsistent at the gym since starting (finished just last week) a job. I was just about there with a 400lb squat and 500lb deadlift a month ago with 315x8 for squat and 405x8 on DL, but I also got too heavy at about 200lbs body weight. I'm working on slimming down and building back up with less fat (190lbs this morning) and maybe making it to those numbers before I hit the end of my second year lifting.

Anyway, you can watch me fail twice at 495lbs:

Nice attempt. You do a lot of warm up volume. What saws that, 405x8? I'd recommend doing higher rep at the real light weight, and only doing one or two once you start getting heavier, if your goal is 1RM. You want to be warmed up, but you don't want to be drained.

That day, I just felt like I had to test myself on the reps. Then I was like YOLO and attempted 495. My gym buddies laughed as it was after squatting and doing all those other reps as well.

That was a solid effort, although when it didn't break more on that attempt I probably would've quit! Especially after squatting but YOLO, hehe. I remember doing some similar shit in April, hitting a 500 squat PR and then trying to deadlift 505 afterwards. It didn't happen.

I tried your weight (495) sumo about a month ago and couldn't lock it out due to a semi-injured elbow, grip gave out. Normally pull conventional so sumo lags behind but pull both to even out weaknesses. You may want to try again on a day when you aren't squatting and see how you do.

Not quite there yet. Just up it 25 lbs and report back, you should get it but not guaranteed if you've never tried that weight.

Heh I've been doing crazy volume squats for a few weeks. Pulled 555 at 285 last week. Will be double bodyweight sooner than later. I've been training harder than ever lately.

If you want to increase your deadlift, stop wasting your time using them to train your forearms. Do separate gripper exercises and use straps.

Work your stabilizers separately like forearms, rear delts and even calves to stabilize the kneecap. Face pulls, standing calf and gripper will get you there faster and it's way more efficient. Eventually you will be able to lift way more weight raw.

I also recommend using machines more with a wide variety of foot placement. For instance I use the Hammer Strength shrug machine for deadlifts. Some people look at me a little crazy, but then deadlifts are uncommon at gyms in general.... especially Planet Fitness. 🙂

Eventually you get good enough to include stabilizers more with free weights. Don't let anyone scare you off of machines as they isolate so much more than free weights. I do a mixture of both.

YOLO lol. We've all been there at some point 😛.

I did 220kg @ 96.5kg a few weeks ago. I should be able to muster 230 by the end of the year.

Snatch DL 202.5kg also 🙂

585@280 today, 2.09 BW

Old PR was 555, 570 went up way too smooth so I slapped the 6th plate on.

Congrats!

Numbers updated.

It'll be sweet to get 230 but man I've trained about 3x in 3 weeks 🙁. I haven't actually lifted in 3 weeks tomorrow but I'll be down tomorrow. I've done squats once a week or so.

Bw down to 94.1kg this morning. I've had about 3 KFC meals this week and 3 takeaways. But overall calories is probably down as I'm not eating that much food in the day. I've had quite a lot of sweets relative to what I usually have in a week. Metabolisms gone crazy but as long as I don't lose too much strength it's not too bad.

Nice, gotta love the shaking on a max. What is your weight in that vid? I'll add to OP.

Your second link is broken.

Oops! I put it on YT and edited the link. I really thought it would be flagged for the music as it happens in nearly every upload I make, but somehow it isn't...? 😕 You can't see the weight I'm squatting, but you can see the people in the back looking. I'm about 195lbs in both.

I've never sought out a max for DL before. So I went for it last week and I got to 350lbs x2 and stopped there. 160-165lbs usually.
