that's even scarier to me because I personally know people who have gotten stuck in the elevators here, not to mention me and my roomies did too (not in my dorm building, as mine is only 4 floors and is pointless to ride the elevator, but mine is even more scary so I don't like it period). but yea, we climbed out of ours, as thankfully it was still mostly on a floor, had to jump about two feet. but we had to pry the doors open and everything.
so to see this news is really hard. im hoping this helps get OSU's attention and start fixing the elevators in the dorms.

What is known is that as Andrew K. Polakowski tried to climb out of an elevator at his Ohio State University residence hall Friday night, the car dropped, crushing him to death.

But as to why it happened, university and state investigators were not releasing many details yesterday.

Polakowski, 18, a business major from Erie, Pa., was pronounced dead at the scene in Stradley Hall, 138 W. 11 th Ave. on the campus. Fellow students described him as affable and athletic.

"He was an incredibly social and friendly person," said Bill Gordon, who lived two rooms down from Polakowski on Stradley Hall?s third floor. "It?s just so hard to talk about it."

Polakowski was with a group of students who got on the elevator when it stopped on the third floor about 11:30 p.m., said Rick Amweg, Ohio State University assistant chief of police.

For some reason, Polakowski decided to climb out of the car, whose doors remained open, Amweg said. As he did, the car dropped farther.

"He tried to get off, and he became pinned between the elevator and the building," Amweg said.

Although the doors remained open as the elevator moved down, police and state inspectors would not say whether the elevator had malfunctioned until they completed their investigations. Amweg said there was no indication of horseplay on the part of the students.

Columbus firefighters forced the elevator car up far enough to remove Polakowski. He was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.

"The death seems to have been more from asphyxiation rather than blunt injuries," said Franklin County Coroner Brad Lewis.

As OSU police and Columbus fire officials joined state elevator inspectors early yesterday, students were seen carrying flowers into the residence hall.

Grief counselors were on hand on a day when Buckeye football was supposed to be lifting spirits, the university said.

School officials extended their condolences, saying many students had gotten to know the friendly Polakowski in his short time at Ohio State.

Authorities did not release the names of students who were on the elevator and in the hallway when Polakowski was killed.

Third-floor resident Caress Russell came upon Polakowski after he was pinned. She told WBNS-TV (Channel 10) that she saw Polakowski turning blue and ran to have someone call 911.

"I?m not taking the elevator," Russell said. "I may not continue to stay here."

Several students outside the residence hall yesterday said they had experienced minor problems with elevators in Stradley. Sixth-floor resident Jeremy Kopp said it was difficult to hold a door open with a hand or foot.

Alex Morando said he was stuck on an elevator two weeks ago for about 45 minutes.

Stradley has three elevators: two passenger cars and a larger lift. Polakowski was in one of the passenger cars.

Denise Lee, spokeswoman for the state Department of Commerce, said elevator inspectors will return to continue their investigation Monday. Until then, the elevator has been sealed.

Elevators are inspected twice a year, Lee said, but the repair history for that elevator was unavailable yesterday.

Columbus firefighters respond to two elevator emergencies a day on average, sometimes at Ohio State, said Battalion Chief Doug Smith.

Smith couldn?t remember a similar accident in the city during his 28 years with the Fire Division. Lee said elevator fatalities are "extremely rare."

Polakowski was one of 1,200 Ohio State Welcome Leaders, students who arrived early to help other incoming students.

"It?s a good way to meet people quickly. They?re kids who want to assist other kids," said Shelly Hoffman, OSU spokeswoman.

Polakowski graduated from Erie?s MacDowell High School. He had planned to major in business administration.

"He was motivated, just a good, all-around kid," said Mike Fiorelli, who taught Polakowski and coached him in soccer.

"Of all the kids I coached throughout my career, I will put him on top as far as being a top person."

Gordon will remember his dorm neighbor simply as a great friend.

Polakowski would urge Gordon to teach him to play the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol on guitar.

"He would come in every day and play the song over and over and over," Gordon said. "He was relentless."

Important lesson - don't go past open doors when there is a malfunction.

That's why there is a trap door above the Elevator for Emergency escape access.

I smell a lawsuit for gross negligence.

Some things just need to be taken care of immediately.
Of a lesser scale, in the campus apartment here, one of the ancient circuit breakers in the breaker box was making an odd buzzing sound, which sounded like internal arcing. I simply told maintenance that they needed to replace it immediately, as it was a fire hazard. They did in fact replace it, which is rather unusual. The apartments are treated more like privately owned places, where maintenance is just a pain in the ass, and is to be avoided if at all possible.

Large, heavy machinery that can turn deadly is not something that you want to go cheap on, especially when it's known to be malfunctioning.

as true as that is, using the emergency escape is really only meant in case there is like, a fire or you've been stuck for a VERY long time. The ones in these elevators are painted over, so one would probably have to kick it very hard, which would be difficult in of itself. plus, being stuck for not even an hour, to me, wouldn't warrant climbing out through that, becuase then you introduce the new game of, what the hell do you do next?
thus why its for emergencies, where someone is probably rescuing you through that trap-door anyway.

Hopefully the university will get sued to hell and be forced to fix every stupid negligent item in their buildings..

After seeing the dorms at UF.. and other campuses, I think dorm life hasn't changed at all since many of them were built. The quality control is horrendous and the buildings are dilapidated.

Many of UF's dorms seem like 'living in trash' with buildings that smell like sh1t the moment you enter them. The electrical lines in most old buildings don't seem to be engineered well enough for the power draw of today's average student.

I never did live in a dorm after being forced to spend one night in Broward at UF.

Aren't you not supposed to go through the elevator doors when there is a malfunction since it could slice you in two if the car moves?

i think the one thing that has changed in the power lines in the rooms, probably at the same time every room got ethernet hookups.
but yea, most school's build the dorms and thats it. all the dorms on campus are relatively old. im hoping to be able to get into much larger rooms next year, and those buildings are newer, complete with kitchens in every room. but i may have to wait till junior or senior year. my room this year is relatively large for a dorm, its a roomy triple. but either way, thing that sucks is I am forced to live on campus for all 4 years, since i am getting room and board paid for by OSU/ROTC.

this is true, however, college kids are impatient, and we dont want to wait for a technician since they take forever. and in the situation spelled out above with the death, it was more of an spontaneous thing, as he supposidely got on and tried to get off relatively quickly, probably before anyone even called for help.

but hey its OSU what can u expect....GO BLUE

bringing rivalry into play is unneccesary. i wouldn't say something if it was UofM. dorms are dorms, and most are in the same condition across the nation.

I'm confused... the story says he tried to CLIMB out of the elevator... so that means it had already dropped several feet? The story doesn't mention it dropping previous to his trying to get out, but I can only assume...

If it had already dropped partway, no way in hell would I try to climb out.

hmm, not sure. i first heard it through my RA after the game yesterday. its a slow word of mouth thing, and i think the university will publicly address the situation soon. i believe my RA is going to set up a meeting, but not sure what it would really address.

btw, what year are you here?

yea there was supposidely a few feet (im assuming something like 4) at the top.
that's something i would not try, but alas, I am not going to go as far as claiming this man was an idiot or anything, out of respect.

there's different ROTC scholarships.
i have both the Room and Board scholarship (OSU money, through ROTC though, only 4 given every year), and a 3 year scholarship from ROTC starting next year (that's federal money).
now, mind you, im not forced, but if i moved off campus, they would lose the money and not be able to give the scholarship to someone else, so out of decency I would stay on campus. Might as well, they would be paying.

If those elevators are anything like the ones that were in my dorm when I went to school then the problems are probably caused by abuse and misuse. Our elevators were always packed with too many people, kids would jump up and down and pull on the doors. Even a properly maintained elevator can't take a beating from college kids on a daily basis.

So do the parents have grounds to sue since the victim made the choice to climb out of the elevator?

this is true. dorm elevators are the most abused on campus.
hell, the time i got stuck was likely caused when the one kid kind of got us to jump, not really sure how, but whatever. after that the elevator ceased at living. lol

I doubt I'll be up for the Michigan game. I'm saving the rest of my vacation time. I can guarantee my brother won't be around for anymore tailgates this season....he's currently in Iraq.
