<< Read the books! The movies come from the books! If you read the books you'll see that they're the same person ... cuz it says in the books. >>

I have read the books. Granted, it's been a while. I own the Episode II novelization, but I'm not reading it until I see the film. Do you by chance know an exact page somewhere that specifically says that Darth Sidious and Senator Palpatine are one in the same? I'm not trying to undermine you or anything -- it has been a long time since I've read them and I want to see it for myself.

<< If you'd read the book I suggested (perhaps again - to refresh your memory?), you'd see why/how he hides himself from the Jedi. It's not all that hard, really. A jedi (or hordes of them) can't tell if there's a "disturbance" on the other side of the galaxy. Besides... that's one part of the DarkSide: deceit.

nik
>>

Yeah, I haven't read that book, but I now feel this uncontrollable urge to :)

Anyway, he's not in some distant part of the galaxy, he's right there on Coruscant. He's a freaking Senator. He probably even has had a Jedi guard detail at certain points, and at the very least there should be Jedi present in large quantities on Coruscant. I take your point, though, that he would be able to hide it, because that's probably just some Dark Skill or other.

Also, I didn't know that he was far away until age 10. Where does Palpatine/Sidious come from? And who trained him in the first place, and at what age?

I haven't touched the book in four months - save tonight for digging it out to get the title right. :) But I don't recall the line "sidious is palpatine" or something to that effect. I remember it being something where Sidious was thinking to himself about moving Maul into position in the shadows behind everything while he assumed a position out in plain sight in the Galactic Senate.

This is turning into an interesting debate. I may have to look through my Episode I novelization again sometime soon and see if there's anything in there that specifically says it.

You are right, we can't assume but everything points to Palpatine=sideous=emperor.

We will find out in a week though, at least more of the story anyways..

edit: man did I fall behind. I need to learn to type faster..

Heh, he was probably trained by Yoda -- but since Yoda is so old he forgot :p

Well, we definitely know that Sentator Palpatine and Emperor Palpatine are one in the same. The missing link is whether or not Darth Sidious is Palpatine. But I agree, we will find out a lot next week.

Haha :) Well, he wasn't trained directly, but Yoda's at the end of the pecking order. Think harder, guys. Think old character who's already dead and whose almost-uber-powerful spirit is laying dormant at this point in the trilogy...

I've read the books. Most of them, in fact. All I'm trying to say is that I can't remember any official, concrete proof (Return of the Jedi doesn't mention Sidious at all) from George Lucas himself saying that they are the same. If it turns out that they are, I officially give you the right to say "I told you so" ;)

Hehehe, fair enough. :D And wow, I think this is the first thread I've posted in more than once. I guess it just takes something I'm really passionate about to get me going.

Wait, was Darth Maul a lord?
Here's a low down on the Sith heirarchy

Dark Mirror (Emperor): Kremit (Yoda)
Black Hand (Direct Assistant to Emperor): Anonymouse (**Note, Not Located here because of Force ability, but rather because of proximity to the Emperor**)
Sith Master (Only 3 Exist):
Dark Knight (Highly Advanced Sith): Darth Korriban
Dark Child (Advanced Sith): Sher Khal'Saad
Sith Lord (Skilled Sith): Amarenth Jadeite
Sith Shadow (Full Sith):
Sith Learner (Apprentice):
Jedi Assassin (Self-explanatory): Simon Menta
Dapawan (Trainee):

Actually, yes. Again, in the book I posted, Sidious refers to him as a Sith Lord. And, in Episode I, he's referred to as Sith Lord.

What?!?!?! Yoda is/was a Sith?!?! :Q:Q:Q

My world has just been rocked!

BTW is any of this stuff 'canon', i.e. from Lucas-authorized storylines? Back when I was into SW, there were only a few 'canon' sources: the three original movies themselves; the radio dramatizations; the Han Solo trilogy; and maybe a couple of other books. But things like Timothy Zahn were definitly NOT 'canon'. Is this distinction still made? Is anything not explicitly 'Lucas' also 'canon'?

No, Yoda was never a dark jedi. You'll notice that post says "dark mirror"

Dark side mirror =
mirror to the dark side =
light side

that makes sense, but what about this (from the site he linked to):

<< The Reformed Sith Order is made of of hardline supporters of Kremit (Yoda). They believe that he is the "Dark Mirror" spoken about in Sith prophesy who was to restore a New Golden Age to the Sith. >>

Guys I dont know if this proves anything, but look at Palpatine's Bio on StarWars.com shows that he is affiliated with Sith. This also proves that Palpatine and the Emperor are the same person...

Well, parts of that are blatantly wrong, too. :) Palpatine didn't die on the second Death Star either. His soul was so powerful that it kept killing the physical flesh that held it. His body was continually cloned to keep him alive and his soul embodied. Palpatine didn't officially die until later in the books when Luke and one other person (Lea?) used the force to make him feel a few positive feelings. He lost control of a storm he created using the force, and it enveloped the ship he was on. The ship crashed to the planet below and apparently there wasn't anything left to clone his body with and no flesh or whatever kept safe elsewhere to clone another body off of.

...err some shiznit like that ;)

Bye bye love...
Bye bye happiness...
Hello loneliness
I think I'm gonna cry-y

Thanks for the link. We know that Palpatine is affiliated with the Sith and we also know that Senator Palpatine and Emperor Palpatine are one in the same. I'm just being stubborn, is all, when I say that we don't technically have proof that Palpatine and Sidious are the same person.

Haha - well, since you're the rebellion (NOT conforming, damn you!) and we're the empire (a mass of people under control of the SW know-it-alls)...

"we will crush the rebellion with one swift stroke."

Difficult to see the Dark Side is. - Yoda

He was very intent on becoming the new Senate leader; part of his path to power, likely as foreseen by the Siths.
