Maul was already a Dark Lord before Episode I. Dooku was taken on just after the end of Episode I to replace Maul - according to the books.

But if Palpatine is sideous, and we know he is, then wouldn't he have trained Maul..

There is only 2 dark sith at a time, no more no less.. So if maul was one and Sideous/palpatine was the other then that's 2. No one else could of trained maul.

Right?

Palpatine isnt sideous

Palpatine was a wee little senator in ep:1 until amidala voted no confidence in the current chancelor and then palpatine became chancellor

I assume palpatines quest for power eventually leads him to the dark side in episode 3

Oh, i haven't read any of the books, so my info may be inaccurate

Oh yeah, during tonights showing of Ep.1, I thought I heard the race color guy(s) calling Anakin a 'human being' -- I'm not sure as I was changing my computer case --- He's not a human being, is he?

Yes, sidious and palpatine are the same person. Multiple personality... double life... call it what you want. They are the same person.

"Though on the surface it would appear the Sith agenda was defeated, the invasion had long-lasting implications for the Republic. In the resulting political upheaval, Supreme Chancellor Valorum was voted out of office, to be replaced by the ambitious Senator Palpatine. And despite the death of his prized apprentice, none of the Jedi knew for sure of Sidious' existence, or of his true identity. "

So his true identity is Palpatine? But then why would they say "to be replaced by ambitious senator palpatine"? I guess my posts are wrong =D

read the books.

Palpatine and Sidious are the same person.

more specifically, read "Star Wars - Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter" and you'll see the same thing.

God, even in Episode 4, Governor Tak tells Vader that the Emperor has disbanded the Republic and given direct control to their immediate overseers. Who's over those? The Emperor (Palpatine). Who's the Emperor? The dark lord that has trained the last three (or so) Sith: Sidious.

They are the same person. Sidious manipulated the trade federation into messing with the naboo to get the sympathy vote for palpatine. He becomes emperor, starts up the empire and runs it. Pretty obvious.

Also, look at the actor. Can't you tell? Listen to the voice. Look at the final scene of EP1. They do an eerie shot of palpatine at the end when qui-gon (sp?) is burning... forshadowing :)

<< That's what I though. He then turns into the Emperor. He plays many roles >>

See... becoming Lord over the galaxy gets you all kinds of names. Chancellor Palpatine, Emperor Palpatine, etc.

mmm, yeah, that's really interesting, I always just assumed that Sidious was Palpatine, but it's kind of weird that he could 'hide in broad daylight' as it were by being this Senator in the Republic without any of the Jedi finding out that he's actually a Sith Lord or even knowing that he had any Force powers.

I mean, in the Republic, weren't the Jedi knights always looking for new Jedi? And wouldn't Palpatine's blood have been analyzed at one point in his career, just for some official reason? And wouldn't they have found the miticlorians (sp?) that clearly MUST be there in extremely huge quanitities if this guy is capable of being the most powerful Force-wielder in the universe? ... pretty damn sneaky of him. Damn dark siders! ;)

BTW I haven't read any of the newer books. Just ANH-ROTJ, plus Han Solo Trilogy, Timothy Zahn trilogy, and a couple more.... it's been about 8 years now since I was a hardcore fan :D

Jedi equivalent = any master. I've already seen Yoda using the force lightning.

I don't mean to jump in here (well, sorta :) ). I'm a big Star Wars fan and from what I know, no where does it officially say that Darth Sidious is the same as Senator Palpatine. Yes, I know they're played by the same actor, but I'm being a nitpicker right now because I'm such a big fan. They're both played by Ian McDiarmid, yes, and Senator Palpatine does say things that hints that he is Darth Sidious, but until Episode II or III, we don't actually know this for a fact. I'm probably going to get flamed for this... Hehehe. Be gentle.

If you'd read the book I suggested (perhaps again - to refresh your memory?), you'd see why/how he hides himself from the Jedi. It's not all that hard, really. A jedi (or hordes of them) can't tell if there's a "disturbance" on the other side of the galaxy. Besides... that's one part of the DarkSide: deceit.

If he didn't come to the planet until he was 10+ years of age he wouldn't have been tested. The jedi look for children 6 and under. It was a hassle in the first place to even get Anakin trained.

Read the books! The movies come from the books! If you read the books you'll see that they're the same person ... cuz it says in the books.

For the reading impaired:

Sidious=Palpatine=Emperor=Sith Trainer of Maul and Dooku and Vader (I don't know who Dooku is yet, haven't read any of the new books)

I thought it was blatantly obvious from Episode 1 that Palpatine == Darth Sidious. He's not credited on IMDB.com as being Sidious. No one is, he's uncredited.

However, for episodes II and III he is...
