Doomsday preppers.

Those folks are stupid beyond stupid.

It's one thing to have some supplies laid in should there be some kind of emergency, (tornado, hurricane, earthquake, etc.) and even a few guns and ammo isn't a bad idea, but these folks have gone "full retard" with the concept.

For some people, yes, prepping takes over and consumes their life.

Years ago I knew a guy who swore up and down the government was watching him. He busted holes in the walls, then stuck a rifle into the hole. The nut case had a weapon stored in every room of the house. The guy had a low income job so he did not have to pay income tax. He lived in self induced poverty so he did not have to pay income taxes.

Did he have a bunch of copies of The Catcher in the Rye?

I do not know. This was back in the mid-1980s when I was 17 and 18 years old.

The man was the father of one of my buddies. Going over to his house was like walking into the twilight zone. I kept thinking "what world do you come from?"

The guy carried a 1911 with him where ever he went, and this was before the concealed carry permit law was passed. He was an absolute nut case who lived in constant fear of government agents coming after him at any second.

From what I saw, the guy did nothing to draw attention to himself. As far as I knew he did not modify weapons, no explosives, did not deal in drugs,,,, he did nothing to draw attention to himself or his family.

Come on. I spent a few years working with adults with mental retardation. Saying that those folks have gone "full retard" is an insult to the mentally retarded everywhere. Those folks are well beyond full retard. I watched the show on 2 or 3 occasions for about 20 minutes total. What gets me is how their families seem to go along with it - almost like they're pretending to agree with the nutty grampa so that they can get their 15 minutes on television. I loved the guy who claimed that an EMP was going to take out every truck in existence.

And somehow, I got a vibe from that underground bus bunker guy that when he said he'd take in children, he meant, "I'll save your little girls from total worldwide destruction, and I'll help repopulate the world with them." He was the guy with the strip naked & get showered off room at the entrance. I certainly wouldn't trust him with my kids.

My parents are convinced the economy and country is on the verge of collapse. I contend it always has been, its just the information is so much more readily available now that we see every facet of everything out there. At any rate, my father is wanting to get his conceal and carry permit and has a 12 gauge and 22 already. I just took my hunter safety and am going to get my conceal and carry, but first need to buy a gun safe and trigger locks since I have 3 boys in my house who are naturally curious.

I just don't understand how some people believe this stuff.

- EMP blast? Very disputed over whether it's even possible for a nuclear detonation to take out a large portion of the country.
- Solar flare? Some of them even quote previous flares (in the early 2000's) that did NOTHING. No cognitive dissonance there?
- 2012? You're just being gullible.
- Social/economic collapse? It would take something enormous - like something that would cause the collapse of society by itself (nuclear war, asteroid impact, etc.). If unemployment got super high (25%+), it would suck for a lot of people, but it's not the end of the world. Look at 3rd world countries - life is pretty bad, but it's not like millions are dying every day. We would probably become more of an agrarian society.
- Pandemic? Your $2 plastic suits and pretty poor emergency showers aren't going to keep you from getting infected.

In general, I think that prepping for the "end of the world" is kind of pointless. For the things that could really happen and really affect society in a big way (nuclear war, asteroid impact, pandemic), there's really no way to predict or prepare for it. Your 3 month/6 month/5 year/whatever food supply and guns aren't going to help much when the planet can no longer support plant life or you're dead from disease.

I do think it's a good idea to prepare for more minor things. It should be obvious to everyone after recent events that they need to be able to provide for themselves for at least a few days. Keep a week of emergency food around. Fill up your bath tub or some water jugs if you hear about a big storm. Have some flash lights and blankets. Make a plan on where to meet if there's an emergency.

Yep. Lock that ammo up from the boys. Mine went through a couple thousand rounds in my 22. I didn't care so much, except they left the casings all over the patio. That, and the red spray paint can they shot - I was mowing through some thick stuff and thought it was blood that had gotten all over me. I panicked trying to find out where I had gotten cut.

I agree on most of those, but I think this one is not so far fetched with things like the Occupy movements, the UK riots last year, Katrina looting, etc. It doesn't have to bring down all of society for you to need a plan.

the EMP Family pissed me off and had me laughing at them. Bottom line is they are practicing bugging out to their super secret safe location which is 3 shipping containers buried in the desert. problem is you dumbfucks is if there is a EMP blast YOUR FUCKING CAR IS NOT GOING TO WORK!!!!!!

They only show retards because that's what people will watch.

I am not a prepper, but i do feel like I should be more prepared for more likely scenarios. We, in SE Michigan, went without electricity for 4 days a few years ago. When someone figured out how to pump gasoline with a generator there were fights in the line getting gas. I could see some serious de-evolution taking place after a couple weeks without electricity/water/etc. It never hurts to spend a little time on a plan.

I'd need a little bunker to properly prepare, but the HOA doesnt allow us to dig holes. I supposed we could keep canned goods in the attic.

The people who do this must assume that they will be nearby when all hell breaks loose. The dad could be forty miles away at work, the kids at school and mom could be anywhere. Getting to your shelter is useless if you're stuck in traffic.

I keep toying with getting about 2 weeks of oh shit supplies together

bad tornado in the wrong part of my area and its back to the stone age for a while, or if new madris really goes off

OP:

omg wtf. the bug out plan is an hour long? thats not bugging out.

Its kinda sad that some people spend their whole lives afraid. I forget what which show this was, but it was the family business that makes these bunkers. All the fathers were afraid that someone was going to rape their wives or daughters, so they were running drills and shooting at targets around their property to get ready. And they raise their kids to be afraid.

I keep a big emergency kit in my car.
Spare clothes, MRE, energy bars, 3 different fire starters, flashlight, radio, batteries for both, mini tool kit, wool blanket, rain gear, whistle, and I think 200 feet of cord.
