Its kinda sad that some people spend their whole lives afraid. I forget what which show this was, but it was the family business that makes these bunkers. All the fathers were afraid that someone was going to rape their wives or daughters, so they were running drills and shooting at targets around their property to get ready. And they raise their kids to be afraid.

The show is called Fox News, and it is on 24/7. All fear, all the time.

Was hoping for a mad max style armored bus.

Son i am disappoint.
Somebody built one. He has a school bus that is armored so he can knock cars out of the way and prevent people getting on it as well. This is for the guy who is afraid an F5 tornado will wipe out his STATE.
As well as lack of preparation to a potential issue...
I can see you are sympathetic to the lunacy of the people on this show but probably too scared to admit exactly how far you do or would like to take it. That's probably for the best.

I've prepared myself as a normal person should for an emergency situation. I have some extra food, a large backpack, water resistant matches, few guns, ammo, etc. I don't see the need to go apeshit over something that has an almost 0% chance of happening.

These guys are wackos, but I also consider all the people fighting for food in a supermarket due to a winter storm and having nothing to eat pretty insane. I laughed at the suffering of all the New Yorkers dumpster diving and fighting rats for food two days after the hurricane.

At least the preppers are willing to try and take care of themselves, the rest are just casualties waiting to happen.

I've not seen the video but one thing I've seen mentioned in this thread which is not correct is the threat of solar flare.

The Carrington Event

That's a 2008 article which mentions a flare from 1859 which are extremely rare but are bound to cause serious problems. Comparing the strongest storms in last 30 years with this would be like making an equivalence between the 1906 San Fransisco earthquake and ones which only rattle the dishes.

Fortunately we have some advanced warning so some preparations can be made, however a Carrington class flare was estimated in a report by Lloyd's and AER to cost 2.3 trillion in damages, and these two are very serious about getting risk right. Imaging if one struck in a cold winter here? One word fits and that's catastrophe. Knowing that I still don't lose any sleep since the risk is still small, but it is in my opinion a factor weighing heavily in favor of moving off grid oriented power schemes as society technology advance.

There's covering your ass and being self sufficient. Survival minded and anticipating likely disasters, and even keep food, water, and gear handy because its fun, but going about your normal life.

Then there are these wierdos. People that actually think zombies could happen and prepare for it by fortifying their moped with 2x4s and barbed wire.

it's all about what you think your worst-case scenario is.

I see nothing wrong with preparing for a natural disaster that could cut you off from outside support for an extended period of time (eg: hurricane wipes out all the bridges into your town and you've got to live off whatever supplies you have for a month)

preparing for the total collapse of society, Mad Max-type scenario is probably edging into crazy-town, though.

This.

We keep a small supply of food and water tucked away in the house but that's all. I'd like to purchase a handgun and a shotgun but just haven't bothered yet.

My cousin is approaching "Doomsday Prepper" status. He is getting a large diesel generator for the house, they're canning tons of food, stocking up on guns and ammo, learning how to garden, learning what berries and plants are safe to eat, and even getting into beekeeping because it will be a valuable trade asset when society breaks down.

All healthy behavior until the last sentence.

All I know is that when the race wars start I'm siding with the Eskimos.

Preparing for the end of the world is ok if you admit its just a hobby and because its fun to buy shit and helps you be self sufficient in a real and more likely emergency.

Actually believing in zombies and the end of society is not ok.

Lulz.

And I love fantasizing about zombies and apocalypse scenarios as much as anyone but come on. I took a look at some of these prepper shows and had to stop. Just ridiculous.

Occasionally you learn some good things like creating wood gas to power generators and cool stuff like that but for the most part its people putting barbed wire on broom handles and pretending to make weapons .

Zombies are fantasy, if you really think that is why most people prepare for 'shit hits the fan' situations then you are just as ignorant.

Society has ended several times on this planet. Hell just a couple days into a disaster shows people killing, raping and looting.

The uber rich are probably some of those that are preparing the most at this moment for 'something'. Strategic bunkers, bomb proof walls, fortified vehicles, months of surplus and even months of wine and exotic foods.

Our world will not last forever, however; that isn't what most even need to focus on...a simple power shift can turn us into something entirely foreign overnight and we are heading more and more in that direction with more and more of our basic rights and the way certain situations can trump even our constitutional rights (Patriot Act).

That said, someone barely surviving and stockpiling weapons and ammo without even basic foods/water is nuts. IMHO stockpiling anything but a few weapons is crazy, what one really wants is ammo. Also these stockpilers let themselves be well known and don't even take basic security precautions and wonder why they get robbed often as well as when the shit really hits the fan will wonder why their neighbors paint a target on them.

Civil unrest and government collapse and or political abuse is a very real threat I agree.

Doomsday Preppers is hard to watch and take seriously though.

You see how crazy people are getting in the south right now over a little snow? People are fighting in stores over items. And people call me a prepper for buying guns and ammo, gardening, canning and raising my own chickens.

We deal with this in our Hurricanes down south as well even when they are not going to be much more than a category 1.

Look at the Katrina violence and mobs that erupted pretty much that first night. People looting stores, raping their neighbors, etc.

Even if one only has to fend for themselves a week or two before the National Guard / Military / Police can intervene that could be past one's lifespan if they are not prepared.

this is what I think as well. I have food and water on hand and ways to cook it and be safe for an extended period of time, but it represents a tiny portion of my time and money. A lot of preppers spend inordinate amounts of time and money preparing for an unlikelihood while sacrificing their current and likely future life hugely.

I don't label myself a prepper but Im likely going steel reinforced 16" concrete and spancrete for exterior walls and roof of my next house. With laminated polycarbonate windows and full frame ram proof doors. Everything proof. Just because.

Just the idea that I can flip a bird to angry mobs and SWAT teams alike amuses me. They don't have tomahawk missiles yet.
