I just don't understand how some people believe this stuff.
- EMP blast? Very disputed over whether it's even possible for a nuclear detonation to take out a large portion of the country.
- Solar flare? Some of them even quote previous flares (in the early 2000's) that did NOTHING. No cognitive dissonance there?
- 2012? You're just being gullible.
- Social/economic collapse? It would take something enormous - like something that would cause the collapse of society by itself (nuclear war, asteroid impact, etc.). If unemployment got super high (25%+), it would suck for a lot of people, but it's not the end of the world. Look at 3rd world countries - life is pretty bad, but it's not like millions are dying every day. We would probably become more of an agrarian society.
- Pandemic? Your $2 plastic suits and pretty poor emergency showers aren't going to keep you from getting infected.
In general, I think that prepping for the "end of the world" is kind of pointless. For the things that could really happen and really affect society in a big way (nuclear war, asteroid impact, pandemic), there's really no way to predict or prepare for it. Your 3 month/6 month/5 year/whatever food supply and guns aren't going to help much when the planet can no longer support plant life or you're dead from disease.
I do think it's a good idea to prepare for more minor things. It should be obvious to everyone after recent events that they need to be able to provide for themselves for at least a few days. Keep a week of emergency food around. Fill up your bath tub or some water jugs if you hear about a big storm. Have some flash lights and blankets. Make a plan on where to meet if there's an emergency.
