Yep, I agree.

i liked doom3 too. the reason i wasnt dissapointed with the lack of enemy AI, or the annoying enemy spawn thing all the time, was that i didnt expect doom3 to be great in those areas. hey you have to admit it was pretty scary with the little voices and stuff. as far as half life 2 goes, i enjoyed it, but felt let down. the enemy AI in the orginal half life was much better (assasins...). the baddies in hl2 would be smart occasionally, but sometimes you could just lure them through the front door. and also the last two levels really sucked, like something they just threw together.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but hitting grunts in the head has taken them out faster for me. I'll have to check that today.

He's just another person with another opinion, talking about a bunch of crap I've heard a thousand times before. People were expecting the game to fvcking cook breakfast for them instead of them sitting down and playing it, and enjoying it for what it is.

 
Quake 2 was the best of the Quake series by a long-shot.

Quake 1 was awesome and Quake 3 was the biggest pile ever although the graphics were impressive for its time.

CTF on Quake2 was near unbeatable in a multiplayer experience.

I think that's a big part of it right there. It was hyped for years, and many people were probably expecting it to be something it wasn't (whether it "should" have been or not). And of course, the gameplay was pretty simple and repetitive (although here I'll add the disclaimer that I haven't actually played through much of the game, but that seems to be the consensus just about everywhere) - especially when compared with extremely well done games like Half-Life 2.

Graphically it's very impressive, but how many more games are going to end up using the engine? Just Quake 4 and Prey?

In any case, I agree with most of what the article is saying...

What else games are using the Doom 3 Engine? If it reall just comes down to a few...if just a few games bother to use Doom 3 then I would see it as a failure. But if it turned into Quake3, then I would be satisfied.

Besides, Doom3 actually ran well when I had an mx420....and it still LOOKED good. ITs more than I can say for fary cry wchiched looked bad AND was never really smooth (though it got better with t ti4200 instead 😉 )

I would agree though, that unlike the past this wasn't a fun game (read: TOO DARK! It can be scary so as long as you can see, but when I can't see, and i'm reduced to pointing my flashlight all over the screen....nooo thats just stupid) to me. Even though I liked UT over Q3, I still enjoyed the occaisonal fragfest (playing the demo 😉 Q3 was one of the only games you could play with a large multiplayer community in the demo...AOE1 Demo you could also...
 
I highly enjoyed D3... but i'm enjoying ROE even more. In fact, i'm taking a little break for the last 2 hrs of playing it.
 
He's a bitter one. D3 will be remembered as a major milestone in the evolution of FPS engines. Whether it'll enjoy widespread adoption in future game titles is another story altogether.

I found the game itself to be above average, though I'll have to admit being somewhat disappointed they didn't just do a eyecandy 1:1 remake of Doom I.

Was the original Doom like Doom 3 where monsters come out behind you and you can't see anything and it was repetetive? I never played it... I did buy Doom 3, mainly for the engine, not the game, so I can begin development on a Quake 4 or RTCW2 map ahead of time and port it over when the games come out, with relative ease (or so I hope). I did play a little bit of D3 but it wasn't fun to me. Too confusing on where to go and picking up PDAs was just blah.

Quake 2 had the best single-player in my opinion. If I was in the scene early enough to play Quake 1, I bet Q1 would have taken the cake though. Disabling pumps and what not was so fun in Q2. Q3 didn't even have a single player. Well if you call multiplayer with bots single player I guess it did. I find Quake 2 fun to this day. Yesterday I played with a friend co-op and cheats through the entire Quake 2 single player probably in less than an hour. Gotta love the strogg. Right now it's make-it-or-break-it for id's Quake 4. My expectations are quite low because of their recent Doom 3, but I'm a pessimist, so what do I know? HL2 was the only well-pulled-off sequel I've seen in my life, of all games and movies.
 
I remember playing Doom when I was younger, and I don't remember id focusing solely on scare tactics for surprises. You fought hordes of monsters, not just 3 or less like Doom 3.

The original Doom had maps that were puzzles. IE, pillars would fall to the floor revealing monsters, a wall might end up being a lift or a door to the outside. Everything in the game was done with floor triggers. IE: In 1 room, when you walked in (I think this was in tricks and traps), Stairs start coming out of the wall to reach an unreachable platform and then you get attacked by around 20 invisible monsters that were just sitting up on that platform that you could not see. This never really got you scared though, just got your blood rushing. Oh and I think my reference is from Doom2, but very similar games.

Those who played Quake1 witnessed CTF, TF, Action Quake, and a massive host of then completely original mods come into existence for the first time in an FPS game.
 
yea id havent played doom 3 since i bought the game last year. It would be cool someone remade doom 1 and doom 2 using the doom 3 engine.

I still don't think I've found any multiplayer FPS to be near as much fun as Quake 1 Team Fortress. Still, to me, the best online FPS game that could be played. I also loved the Q1 single player, and to a degree the Q2 single player, even tho it seemed that Q1 and Q2 were not even related (from Satanic symbols and monsters everywhere to futuristic metalic landscape and robot-monster hybrids?). Q3 did nothing for me. Now, as for D3, I still really did enjoy it for what it was, an atmosphere. But that was it. As a game, it was seriously lacking. For gameplay, Far Cry and HL2 beat it hands down.

 
Already replied to this in another thread. The Cliffs:

1) Doom 3 isn't as bad as most people like to rip it for.
2) The engine does seem to pale in comparison to what Unreal E 3 offers.
3) I think Id lost its place as the leading shooter/engine developer when the original Uengine and Unreal showed up in '98.

My point was that looking at the way id ended up implementing Doom 3, they might as well have just done a 1:1 remake of the original.
