Was the original Doom like Doom 3 where monsters come out behind you and you can't see anything and it was repetetive? I never played it...
The original Doom had maps that were puzzles. IE, pillars would fall to the floor revealing monsters, a wall might end up being a lift or a door to the outside. Everything in the game was done with floor triggers. IE: In 1 room, when you walked in (I think this was in tricks and traps), Stairs start coming out of the wall to reach an unreachable platform and then you get attacked by around 20 invisible monsters that were just sitting up on that platform that you could not see. This never really got you scared though, just got your blood rushing. Oh and I think my reference is from Doom2, but very similar games.
Quake 2 had the best single-player in my opinion. If I was in the scene early enough to play Quake 1, I bet Q1 would have taken the cake though.
Yep, anyone who played Q1 during its prime would be crazy not to say it was the best. Hell, anyone who has put any thought into it would agree. Those who played Quake1 witnessed CTF, TF, Action Quake, and a massive host of then completely original mods come into existence for the first time in an FPS game.
