So far so good with doom3, but I wonder if anyone has figured out how to run the game with a higher refresh rate than 60Hz. There's too much tearing going on right now.

I don't have doom III yet. But I would assume you can force refresh rates in the Nvidia control panel I think that tab is called override refresh or something like that.

Upping your refresh rate will make tearing *worse*. Turn on VSync.

Exactly, Vsync will match up your fps and your refresh to give a much more bearable screen, but don't benchmark like that as it will appear to drop your fps dramatically.

OK I'll leave Vsync on...

I've added the line seta r_displayrefresh "85" in the cfg file C:\Program Files\Doom 3\base. When I launched Doom3 it held at 85Hz. Looked 100 times better, however when I exit the game and re-launch it reverts back to 60Hz. Grrr..

I can't stand this dam flicker...The game is dark enough, and flickering, 800x600@60hz and only a ti4400. All of this is taking its toll on my eyes.

I'll edit that cfg everytime I launch if I have to. Just trying to find a way for it to hold 85hz

The game is getting hella good BTW!! I think I have perma goosebumps!

system specs:

Athlon2500
asus ti4400 128mb
asus A7n8x-2.0
1gig mushkin ddr 222 PC3200
IIyama 22" VisionMasterPro513
all clocked at defaults

Upping your refresh rate will make tearing *worse*.
The lower the refresh rate the more tearing you get. So no, it'll make it better.

yeah. you can up your refresh rate and it should help. or you can just turn on vsync. when i first started to play the game, i was like... wtf is with all this tearing. then right after i turned on vsync, it all went away and the game plays silky smooth. this is at 1600x1200, all details on and high quality, along with 4x AA. pretty satisfied with my X800 Pro, but i still wouldnt mind a 6800GT. i'd go either way, since they're both really good cards.

I believe he meant upping it past what your monitor is capable of.

Ppl I think there's a reason that they have locked the refresh rate to 60Hz.
It will probably provide the "right" gaming experience as it's meant to be played.(Nothing to do with Nvidia's logo here :D)
Othrwise they would have let us to choose. Just turn vsync on for tearing.

Interestingly enough, didn't the original Doom have a severe tearing problem too? Or was that locked to vsync by default?

On CRTs yes, LCDs not at all. In this case he has a CRT so yes it would make it better.

This is bad. I haven't got DOOM3 yet but 60 Hz would just mutilate my eyes, and I have absolutely no plans to get an LCD until at least one more generation improvement.

I think the first patch should definitely allow changing the refresh rate.

Yeah, my bad. Must have thought it was backwards day or something. :p

Still, turning on VSync is the real solution here.

Get ReForce, and use it to set 85Hz for the required resolutions.
Worked for me (9800) and used to work with my Ti4400.

Never heard of that prog, but definitely sounds like it's worth a look

I agree. I just can't take 60 Hz. Same for my 8 yr old son. He looks like a freakin red-eyed zombie after about 1 hr on 60 Hz. Can't be good for the eyes.

Edit: I think the 60 Hz thingy is the reason behind all the "playing Doom 3 gives me a headache" posts.

Really? I wonder if TV and movies give people headaches too? They run far lower than 60hz...

If you do that you'll get a black screen with an "out of range" error.

LCDs not at all.
On LCDs upping the refresh rate has absolutely no effect since it's tied to DVI and the response rate.

I thought so too... but a lot of things you thought you couldn't live with (or without) don't apply to Doom 3 because of it's darkness. Your eyes are more sensative to lightness than darkness... I don't notice any flickering at 60 Hz.

I don't notice any flickering at
  • Monitor refresh rate.
  • Game engine refresh rate.
  • Game renderer framerate.
The three are completely different and should not be confused with each other. Flickering/tearing is a problem with display refresh rate and has absolutely nothing at all to do with Doom III.
