Different ppl . Different flavors... As long as it's not a biased opinion I respect everyone's opinion.

This is a nice thread but definately not for sticky. Sorry mate just my opinion.
Which reminds me. I have to bump Keys once more. A well deserved one...

I have this picture of people on the moon holding an american flag. The sun is hitting them and their shadow is pitch black. The sky is also pitch black.

My question is, what exactly is causing this to be different than the earth, where things such as radiostiy would take place on earth and make the shadow less dark?

And Could this be what is happening in Doom3 on Mars?

Any answers here?

For somepeople who are not understanding this. It is not that i did an awesome post... it is because of the reasons i listed above. Also it is to emphasize a point that goes along iwht my explanation.

We cant keep answering the same questions therefore i requested (and was approved) a sticky for this thread. By all means though use this to discuss DIII but i just wanted to get a point across.

mars has an atmosphere and is also closer to the sun. Therefore if anything, shadows should be lighter there. But D3 takes place indoors so in that regard dark is dark.

What's happening in D3 (I think this might have been said earlier) is that it would absolutely kill performance to trace the light bouncing around in real time. So all the light in the game is, in effect, incredibly hard lighting with completely black shadows. This could be fixed if id had wanted to by adding second lights to each light source which would not cast shadows (would go around objects), increasing the level of light in the room slighty (in the vicinity of the light at least) to make it appear like there was some ray bouncing, but that would basically be doubling the amount of light sources used in the game. Anyway it isn't because that's the way light would be on Mars; it's just because they wanted to make this game perform well, instead of turn it into a slideshow for even the best computers.

And since when is Mars closer to the sun than the moon, or did I miss something?

I have a top notch system. The problem I have with DOOM3 is the lack of changes in scenery. If they had missions that had some graphical differences it would have been the best game I have played to date. Why not have a couple missions outside??? I mean I can't even begin to describe where I'm at in the game, other than the name of the level. I will definetly finish the game .......but I do not see myself playing any part of it again. Absolutely no replay value...I'm sorry to say. One other thing. I find it totally funny how I can shoot a shotgun in real life a hell of a lot faster then this super Marine can in the game. What a joke.:) From buggy a%% beta Far Cry to repetetive Doom3....Yawn. Maybe "a day late and a dollar short" HL2 will have the last laugh after all.....that would be hilarious.. Especially when STALKER has been postponed until next year. God I hope Rome total war will save the day....:)

I hear that Carmack has been busy working on a "Light Switch" mod for all the people complaining because they're afraid of the dark and can't react fast ehough to switch from flashlight to gun. After applying the mod, each room will have a light switch that when activated, will illuminate the room with the equivalent of a 300w bulb. That way, you'll be able to walk in the room with your gun drawn and check out all the corners and closets (not to mention peek under the bed) in case a scary monster is in there.
I like the darkness, I think it adds to sonething called atmosphere in the game. I've been waiting for a game like this for a long time.

What a bunch of pansies. What's next, removing the monsters because they're too scary?

How the heck would the zombies breathe outside, smart guy?!?!?!

LOL, JK. I don't know, I don't think outside on Mars would add much to it. The Mars terrain is probably pretty boring, and you would know when you came up to any tall rock, an imp would be behind it.
It would add much humor to the game to see the zombies roaming a barren space landscape, although I don't know if they were shooting for laughs?

So this game wasn't for you. Nothing in this world satisfies 100% of everybody. You give a million dollars to people, and you're going to get some complaining that they have to pay taxes on it.

So you don't like this game, move on. But stop complaining about obvious intentional features of the game. Do you people bitch about every single game and feature you don't like?

lol.. keep talking dude.

I really liked DOOM3's darkness - you have no choice but to walk around with just a flashlight to see where you are going, jump in your seat when a Demon pops up out of nowhere, then quickly switch to a gun and fire randomly in the dark in the general direction of the Demon only catching a glimpse of it when the gunpower in your bullet explodes. I tried the flashlight/duct-tape mod for all but 5 minutes before removing it. It ruined the fear-factor of the game. And, yes, it can get scary playing in a pitch-black room in 5.1 sound. Keep glancing over my shoulder thinking a portal to hell will open up at any moment. :)

Here in the Uk have just got my hands on Doom3, it rocks,I just cant understand what all the moaning is about. For me the dark rooms make the game, I just love the flashlight, peering into dark corners not knowing whats there, having to switch between gun and light is ace, adds to the scary feel of the game.Lighting plays such a large part in this game, somtimes I just stop and look around at the great lighting effects, awesome, and the dust in the light beam wow. This is an amazing game and When I finish it I know that I shall go back and do it all again, well done id:D

My sources told me Carmack is working on another mod that will change the deamons into various Sesame Street-like characters so they're not so scary. He was going to use real Sesame Street characters, but ran into lisencing problems. So instead of Big Bird there will be Enormous Eagle, a big friendly bald eagle who likes giving hugs rather than hitting you with a wrench... and instead of Elmo there will be Elmer, a little white furry guy who will follow you around with two 1 million candle power spotlights (one in each hand) illuminating every corner for you... I'll avoid telling about any of the other characters so I don't spoil the whole mod for you... ;)

I posted my thoughts in another thread but I'll quickly revisit them here. Doom3 preys upon our natural fear of the dark, hearing thing scuffle, scuttle, slither, slink, clatter and clang in the dark dredges up all manner of horrifying imagery. You have to let your primal fear out to play with this game in order to enjoy it. Some seem to be expecting the immersion to be forced upon them instead of providing the frame of mind necessary to immersion. I think some are afraid to let themselves be afraid, so they numb themselves to the atmosphere the game provides and approach it cynically, logically, and consequently, boringly ;)

This is John Carpenter style Sci-Fi horror at it's best! I love this genre and only wish D3 had more of a "Event Horizon" feel to the evil. Other than that I'm digging it and I'm only just now past Alpha Labs 4. I have never spent so much time putting my back in a corner, crouching, and carefully listening to every sound as I have with this game. I have let my primal fears loose and they have reacted to this game the way I reacted to strange shadows fleeing across my bedroom wall as a child. I haven't experienced this type of blood pumping fear based response since I saw Jaws as a child. Man this game makes me wax nostalgic because of the chilhood fear it can produce if allowed to :) My advice is let yourself go, give in, and start enjoying the terrifying journey through hell instead of logically and critically evaluating the engine, graphics, and style of game play :light: Just a thought :)

Exactly! Sort of like when athletes psyche themselves out at a big competition, you have to psyche yourself out a little bit when playing Doom 3. I don't enjoy it that much during the daytime and stopped playing it when the sun is up. But at nighttime in a pitch-black room with all of the shades drawn, the 5.1 sound thumping away, and a rickety in-wall air-conditioner providing background hum, I can let my mind play tricks on me and really enjoy Doom 3.
