they should of released it as soon as bb broke the embargo, now people are downloading due to ease and desperation, most would buy it if it was out.

It's XP running in "classic" theme.

I posted this in the hot deals thread right before it got locked, but I'll share my experience of playing the first level here:

Just installed it last night, it runs pretty decent at 1024-768 noAA/8xAS on a p4 3.0 with a 9700 pro. Decent meaning 30-60 fps with an average of around 45. I'm pretty picky about smoothness, and its totally playable, although inn action heavy scenes it does slow down a tad.

As for the actual game, I must say I'm a tad dissapointed graphics wise. The atmosphere and the sound are incredible; you need to use headphones/4.1+ setup to know where these monsters are coming from. Using headphones, I could actually anticipate and kill a demon imp as he crawled around on the cieling before dropping on me. Otherwise, the game is incredibly scary, both scripted moments, and just wandering around in the dark.

My problem with the graphics is just general level of detail. I expected magnificance, but some things are just average, such as how a soda can is nothing more than an octogonal cylinder, and how punching it results in some weird physics. But my main gripe is with the textures. Im using HQ right now, with all the options on. From far away, the textures look great, especially with the volumetric lightning and the use of environmental bump mapping. However, walking up close to something, such as a door reveals a rather pixelized texture. I kind of expected more, especially since texture compression was used extensively. I do have to admit though, using the flashlight is really fun.

Otherwise, the game is incredible. The suspense gets to me, and I have to take short breaks .

I checked my local BB; they didn't have it, but I was able to get some info from a friend who works there. Apparantly corporate was aware of the early release and had sent out some company-wide memo about it. Unfortunately my BB wasn't one of the stores that did the early release, and it looks like the earliest they'll get it is Wednesday the 4th, not the 3rd.

Meh, it's not like I can play it anyway. I have to wait for my new mobo and processor to show up before I even have a working desktop.

I ran this on my PC and it ran choppy with my PC at these specs:

OS: WinXP Professional 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build #2600)
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (T-Bred) , 2.00 GHz
Video: ATi Radeon 9500 @ 9700 (http://www.ocfaq.com/softmod)
Memory: 1536MB

I ran it at 1280x1024 @ High detail (there are 4 settings ... low, med, high, ultra)

I havent tried running it in medium detail yet and soon will. Hopefully it doesn't run choppy. I was kinda disapointed that it ran choppy, and there wasn't even much going on on the screen.

I played it a little last night. Pretty cool game so far. My PC was not quite up to playing it well. I need a new video card.

Lower the resolution. A 9700NP cant handle 1280-1024 with high detail, especially with a axp 2400. 1024-768 on medium should be doable.

I installed it this a.m. I have to work so I haven't made it past the first level. I have a flashlight, a pistol and two fists which seem to be the most effective.

Work box isn't the gaming machine I'd like it to be but it looks pretty good.

I picked it up at best buy on metcalf in overland park.

This is not a rant, but just an opinion.

For $54.99, I expected more... a LOT more.

The game is dark.. ok, so you say its to add to the atmosphere.

Well, the game is darn near pitch black even with the gamma turned way up. I'm playing this in a pitch black basement with ZERO lights on except the screen. Its nearly unplayable.

I'm playing this on a radeon 9700 pro, 3.2 ghz pentium 4 setup. ATI driver version 6.14.10.6458

Doom is and always has been a run and gun type game. Doom 1 and 2 were get the gun, mow down the baddy, and run to the next level.

Cant do it with this game.. and its ZERO scary since you cant see who is shooting at you. I'm severely disapointed to the point where I think I may call up idsoftware and ask for reimbursement. Yes, its THAT bad.

To be fair however, I am just about 20 mins into the game, but its the same crud so far. Stumble around looking for stairs, climb up, get shot at by something hiding in the darkness (which is 98% of everywhere), find the person shooting, kill them, go to next room, rinse, repeat.

EBGames didn't have it...they just got enough in for preorders. I asked them if there was any way they would sell a copy, because I know there are people that always cancel or don't pick up their copy, but they wouldn't do it. So I said screw `em and ordered a copy from GoGamer for $60 inc. overnight shipping...hopefully it'll be here tomorrow.

You know, I'm reading the comments from people who have played this game and have heard good and bad. Most of it is good but there are the usual critics who have to say it sucks because it's too dark or because they "expected more" and it's nothing we haven't played before. I bet there will be a lot of criticism from the people who wanted something along the lines of the original DOOM/DOOM 2 games...if you want frantic, mindless run n' gunning with powerful weapons then stop playing DOOM 3 because you can pick up both Serious Sam 1 and 2 for less than half of what DOOM 3 costs. DOOM 3 appears to be very frantic and it does have powerful weapons, and PC gamer said themselves that there aren't many spots where you WON'T be shooting or running from something, so what's the problem? I'll reserve judgment until my copy arrives and I play it, but from the reviews and video footage I've seen I think I'll be thrilled with it (or at least NOT severely disappointed like slag said he was/is). I loved how eerie/scary System Shock 2 was and although DOOM 3 appears to have a lot more action, I think it's kind of in the same vein of horrific PC games.

As for it being too dark, I'm not sure what to say. I think saying that is pitch black 98% of the time is an extreme exaggeration...as I said, I'll reserve actual judgment until I play it but I've downloaded no less than 4 videos of the game in action and there were dark spots but there was not a single area in those videos where you couldn't see in front of you at all. There may be some spots like that in the game but I'm willing to be they don't make up 98% of every level. There were some spots with very dim lighting or where the facility lights had been damaged/disabled, but the gunfire lit things up quite nicely and made for a very exciting-looking experience. It's called atmosphere.

I can't wait to get my copy. If I get it and decide it sucks, I won't be afraid to say so. I just think some people are just too hard to please and are picky and/or jaded, because if you're an FPS or id Software fan and you don't like DOOM 3, it might be time to find a different hobby or at least a different genre of games to play.
