Doom 3 = disappointment

Homerboy

Lifer
Just thought I'd start a cleaner thread where peopel could post their disappointments or rebuttals

From my post in the "** OFFICIAL DOOM 3 THREAD** KEEP ALL THE DOOM 3 CHATTER IN THIS THREAD, GUYS!!"

Im not OVERLY impressed as of yet (granted I will admit I have only played maybe 90 mins of it)
While visually impressive and submersive (this is a game to ONLY play at night with all the lights off in your room) the game play is pretty blase'

And the whole "creepy and scare ya to death" aspect wore thin pretty quick on me. Sure the first few things were like "WHOAH MOMMA!" but after that its almost predictable.

I will say its almost TOO dark. Hell half the time your shooting into the pitch black at a set of glowing eyeballs or something possibly moving in a threatening manner.

I think the fact that Farcry being released before D3 really took some of the glow off of it. I;ve already seen jaw dropping graphics so id loses some points there. Granted there's more abuse of it in D3.

Don't get me wrong its a very good game... but I have yet to tag it as "great". Maybe it gets even better as you get into it, but I don't think its sets the bar any higher than FarCry has already.

I would say Doom 3 is decent to mediocore game. The graphics are great, and I imagine you can do some great things with the engine. Yeah it is scary (if your idea of scary is having the lights turned off every other second annoying the hell out of you and making you switch to your flashlight). The storyline and gameplay are just ok. And with no multiplayer (no 4 player does not count and multiplayer) it is just a 1 and done game. After paying $55 for this game I haven't got ripped off this bad since I bought a lap dance from that husky stripper with a bulge in her crotch.

Mmm, hype. Hypity hype hype. Tastes great before it rips your arm off and beats you with it.

Add me to the 'it's MEH' list. I've played a couple of hours of it so far, I'm not really all that impressed. If you like scarefests, you'll like it. My gripes (minor spoilers)

************minor spoilers follow

1.) So I can't have a flashlight, even though some of the areas are so dark you can't see your hand in front of your face? Give me a break.
2.) The 'I just passed that area and from behind my back comes a baddy that dropped out of the ceiling' BS.
3.) Average baddies take too many shots to drop, and if they get in claw range, it's over.
4.) traps set, anytime you hit a cache of ammo or health, you can rest assured it's a trap and you'll have a couple of baddies to shoot.

The story isn't even that great folks. I guess I'm hard to please, but I enjoyed FarCry much more at the same point in my gameplay. I'll admit the first time the deamons arrive I got goosebumps and a couple of times after that, but it gets old quick.

Back to it, hoping it gets better. Oh and it does run well on high at 1024x768 on my 3.2 with X800pro. I had to crank it back down from 1280x1024 though as I was getting mega jaggies and tears.

Sounds like you guys bought into the hype and expected it to be a life-changing experience or something.

I haven't played it yet, but i was able to pick up a copy just before going to work, and will pop it in as soon as i get home... my expectation is that the game will be very similar to Doom 1 and 2, just better graphics, and if i get that, then i got my value.

As for the multiplayer limitation, if you had taken even a cursory glance at any of the Doom3 threads and previews the last few weeks, you would have realized that it was limited to 4.

exactly all my points. Like I said I'm not that far into it either, so maybe it changes up some? And I did the exact same thing on my 3200+ NV5900 (@ 480/950)

nope... I actually EXPECTED a disappointment, but not with these stupid issues like the flashlight and the "baddie outta no-where on my back" thing.

Actually I find it nothing like the originals.

Yep, more than likely. Same thing happened when the 2nd Matrix film came out, same thing will probably happen when HL2 comes out.

FC was good because no one was expecting it, therefore no hype. Hype kills games and movies.

I'll be able to give my opinion on it when they decide to release it here in the UK.

Confused

Has any id games had a great single player experience? This may be their best yet, but that's not saying much. They make engines...

I was very dissapointed too, espcially after building a new system to handle it. Although it is very fluid, but it is just too dark in alot of places. I do like the fact that it did scare teh shite out of me tho.

Well how did you expect it to disappoint you? I haven't played the game yet, but i've played other horror games, and they're set in the dark too, with baddies jumping at you out of the darkness. This isn't like Farcry where you can see things hiding in shrubs down the line, but they need to hide somewhere... so where else could it be? Um the shadows maybe?

Thus far, I like D 1&2 better. Sorry.

Yes I bought the hype. 4 years in the making, why wouldn't I? And by the buzz all over the net, I'm certainly not alone.

you do get a flashlight, hang in there, don't base your thoughts on the game off of 2 levels...

I have the flashlight, but its RETARDED that I cant use the flashlight and a gun at the same time.

well Im not havign any hardware issues at all..
16x12 with 4x AA on High and NO lag tearing or jitters...
I expected the game to be dark.. it reminds me alot of Alien and Aliens for the environment.. VERY dark very creepy even when the station is normal.. (I wouldnt want to be stationed there even in the best of times..)
The new Engine is all about this darkness "deep shadow" or whatever carmack called it so dont expect to be able to make it brighter...
I think having to use the flashlight seperatly from the gun is a tool to make the game more scary since you have to choose.. being able to see or having your trusty gun ready...

i cant tell you how many times i walked into a dark room with my gun drawn to hear a noise turn on my fashlight and boom.. be staring into the mug of something nasty....
very freaking scary...

Q's for you to A:

1) Anyone tried cooperative mode (does it even exist?)

2) How far along is everyone? Farcry for me was mediocre for a while as well.

3) How's the sound?

No coop it was taken out...

im about an hour or so into it.,..

I preferred early on in Farcry.. I think the trigens were dumb as hell.. I prefer to fight the soldiers..

I agree with you there, but I really loved the massive battles and what not later.

I guess I'm one of the few in this thread that like it(although I never envisioned it to be a "life-altering" experience). I'm only through the Alpha Labs area, but it's been entertaining so far and I think it's a well made game.

The graphics are of course very nice and I think the models are very well done. The weapons are nice as well(although I've only seen 3 of them). I really enjoy how well the sound was implemented as it adds a lot to setting the mood for the scary aspect of the game. I've heard people complain about the PDA thing, but I like it. The voice acting on the sound clips in your PDA is pretty good IMO and I think it adds to setting up the story.

As far as the story....of course it's been done before. There aren't too many FPS single player story lines that don't repeat themselves after this many years. I think Id did a good job on taking it and turning it into a horror type fps...more so than the other "something went terribly wrong in the lab" games I've played. I guess that's why the constant darkness in the game doesn't bother me(or the flashlight/gun switching).

As I noted above, so far it's been very enjoyable and seems to be sucking me in a bit more as I progress.

Self

I've got a pre-order in with Go-gamer for Doom 3....which I am trying now to cancel (via email) based on what I've read here. It may be too late to cancel and if it is, I'll give it a try. Seems to me that Id is going the 'boo-in-the-dark' route which doesn't interest me very much at all. What good are all those great graphics if you can't see them?
