I hate to say this cause it happened here. But people who communicate on the internet and never ever meet face to face with these folks are fools to get all serious. YOU DO NOT KNOW WHO IS ON THE OTHER COMPUTER. And a lot of folks here learned that the hard the way. While things like this in way can be hilarious, when people develop these so called "relationships" over the internet they kinda leave themselves open to being made a fool of which is not funny. I have meant several folks from off this board and other various ones, but I don't get all carried away with making relationships with people off the internet. Folks who do that need to get a damn life.

That actually happened to me once. Quite sad. I knew the guy for a couple years before he died in a car accident. He is still on my buddy list.

I normally just figure they got something better to do that waste their time online, and so I am happy for them.

I dont IM anybody but I do have a few friends on file-sharing networks.
I miss them when I'm 98% finished with some good smut and they go off forever.
Then I look around to complete the file and NO ONE else has it.

This is totally not what you were talking about is it??

Yeah i know where you are coming from.

I used to be an active MSN chatrooms chatter, so i got to know hundreds of people, & filled up a couple MSN contact lists too...i kinda feel bad now, cause i never talk to more than 10% of the people on my contacts...& i wonder what happened to some of them too.

Well, if you've met this person, do you not have any other way to contact them?

You know... I used to agree with that thought, but I stopped a while ago. I know quite a few couples that met over the internet, finally got together for pizza & drinks (or whatever) one day, and they've lived happily ever after... married to each other. I can think of a couple of people that I care a lot about, one of which I've not yet met in real life; the other I've met only once, and briefly at that. If either of them (or a couple of other people I'm not quite as close to) completely dropped off the face of the earth... you'd better believe I'd cry foul, and I'd probably do more than many would, trying to figure out what the fvck happened.

I agree that it's not funny if someone's made fun of online... and yes, you do somewhat leave yourself open to that by having an online relationship with someone. Is it worth it? Not to a lot of people. But to some? Definitely.

On a tangent, Bruce Sterling, in his novel "Schizmatrix", talks about the future custom of people who have "faded". These are people who have died, but are either too polite or too embarrassed to admit the fact. So they leave in place an elaborate system of answering machine messages, and whatnot, to perpetuate the illusion that they are still alive.
