Don't you hate people who are so ignorant when it comes to Asians?

Dude that was part of the joke. Everyone else here can see that why cant you? Do you honestly think that someone would actually believe that korean and chinese is the same language? Get a grip

<<Well, then you have no argument because we cannot agree nor disagree with your statement because we have no context, so this thread is worthless either way. Thanks for playing. >>

How did this thread even became an argument in the first place? Regardless whether or not the statement was part of the joke, the truth still lies that a lot of people are ignorant about Asian culture. And this thread is obviously worth something for you to make previous posts as well as the one to reply to this one 😛

<<Read your words more carefully, hon'. If you let go of your emotion first, then you'll see the pic you're missing. Your statement above is logically admitting that the statement in question was in facta part of the joke.

And if I may add, I have watched the BET comedy on enough occasions to conclude that every comments made by a comedian amidst the audience is always part of the joke. So how you reached this conclusion of yours puzzles me. My guess is either you aren't a regular listener and just happened to have stumbled upon it. Or you are just plain too sensitive about any mention of "Asians" in humour. Please pick one yourself, for it has to be the only logical explanation for your reaction and statement. >>

OMG, how do you guys STILL say I'm too emotional when I've said it a hundred times that I'm not uptight about it. Do people ever read posts following the original one? sheesh.

<<Hoeboy, are you extremely well-versed in African-American culture? Most of us know more about "our own kind" than about those of different backgrounds. Perhaps by singling out a Black comedian's innocuous joke, you are showing a bit of prejudice yourself. >>

I didn't single him out because there were a couple of other African-American comedians. BTW, how did you assume he was African-American? Granted it's BET, there are comedians of many different ethnicity.

<< What Korean/Chinese thing? He outright thought Koreans speak Chinese >>

That was part of the joke dood.....haven't you ever heard that b4? I think I have seen the same joke done about a hundred times.....

<<If you are opposed to lumping asians in a category then why are you lumping Italians, Germans, English, Spanish, Mexicans, Poles, Danes, Swiss, ......... into just three categories. Oh and you forgot about all of the non-African blacks, and those from the Mid-East. If I wasn't so tired I could have named some more like the Columbians, Jamaicans, Cubans.......

Believe it or not, but I don't know anything about the caucasian culture, didn't know there was one. If you think caucasians are of one culture then you need some education too. >>

Ya ya, you listed those nationalities so you know what I meant by Caucasians and African-Americans.

<<Dude that was part of the joke. Everyone else here can see that why cant you? Do you honestly think that someone would actually believe that korean and chinese is the same language? Get a grip >>

I'm sorry but if you see the amount of ignorance that I do, you wouldn't make such an assumption.

To each their own opinion and judgement.

So far no one has addressed the bigger picture. Don't tell me there is no truth to how some people are soooooooooooo clueless to the Asian culture.

uhmmmmmmm okay

<< I'll admit to being ignorant.
I do a couple of things,
like they only come up to your knees and their eager to please.
>>

just because your little sister has dark hair doesn't mean she's asian.

So if I can list Chinese, Japanese, Tawainese, Veitnamese, Korean as asians what does that prove? It still doesn't mean I could tell to difference in there languages. Do you know ebonics?????? Do you speak french, german, italian, spanish,........ If so good for you but not all of have the capacity to learn every language on the planet.

An I remember on Howard Stern seeing some Chinese and Koreas who were able to identify who the others were by wether they were wearing 18k or 24k gold jewelry.

Pretty off topic, and sorry to keep the race discussion going, but I had a question that I asked my honors discussion class and they didn't know the answer either

how come in the US when the word "minority" is used, it never refers to Asians?

I mean granted in the world we are the majority, with like 1.3 billion chinese and 1.1 billion Indians alone, w/o regards to any of the other indian and oriental nationalities. But in the US we are definitely a minority, yet no one acknowledges we are. IMHO it always seems like we're regarded as caucasian. I have never heard of a documented date of the first asian admitted into a US school, yet I learned them for african-american and women.

I in no way want to start a race argument, I just want my minority scholarship 😉

Just curious, so please lets keep this civil and not start flaming.

<< gopunk, don't even bother. >>

nah, i wasn't offended, just couldn't resist 😀

monty python eh, i *knew* i'd heard that before...

i would seriously forget about it hoeboy, you can't let little things like this bother you.

i can tell the difference between ebonics, french, german, italian, and spanish, easily. the question is whether people can tell the difference. i think most people could for those languages, but can't for japanese, korean, chinese, vietnamese, etc.

Uhhh okaay. I guess it's okay to think people in Korea speaks Chinese. I guess there is no obvious link between the word Koreans/Korea and Chinese/China. Even a mute cannot confuse that.

I no longer want to argue whether or not the comedian was intentionally doing it.

gopunk, nah although i'm annoyed, i'm not gonna lose sleep over it. i'm gonna have to go watch clips of that jackie chan street fighter from the other thread for the 100th time before i goto bed. can't get enough of it 🙂

how come in the US when the word "minority" is used, it never refers to Asians?

because we're one of the only ones that actually are doing as well or better than the white folk, in terms of education and income.

i'm not kidding, the term "minority" in the u.s. has become synonymous with "not doing as well as"

"So far no one has addressed the bigger picture. Don't tell me there is no truth to how some people are soooooooooooo clueless to the Asian culture."

Gosh! This line gets me freakin' tired.

Can you stop it for a moment? I'm tired of that cliche. When people come here, they are here to assimilate, aren't they? Isn't that what makes America?

If I wnat to learn about Asia, I go straight to the source: Asians. I mean Asians in Asia. Besides, for you to speak of Asian culture as though Indians are the same with Koreans, Chinese, Vietnamese, former Soviet countries, etc. is quite ridiculous to me. Learning Asian cultures would mean every Tom, Dick and Harry would have to be a geographer. I sure do luv geography, but I also respect the fact that not every one is into that and we cannot all be into the same thing. If you're so bent on people being well-versed, then look for companions with such vast knowledge. 🙂 Is not that the point of freedom? 😉

and if you want to learn about european history, you'd have to go to europe, right? oh wait...

the real reason why you dont' learn as much about other cultures as you do about western ones is that the western ones have a larger influence on our current culture.

having said that, our public schools should be teaching different cultures as a means to broaden people's views. the truly well educated are almost *always* knowledgeable about other cultures.

eh? You proposed something and I'm disagreeing, that makes it an argument. 🙂

Aside from the joke, your statement that a lot of people are ignorant about Asian culture is just as ignorant. You're generalizing about people who generalize. It doesn't make you any better.

I'm not saying everyone should go learn ancient Chinese history or Asian geography. Basic knowledge is enough and some people DO NOT even have that basic knowledge. And as you said, Asians come here to assimilate. The United States is a melting pot right? Then we should all have a basic understanding of the cultures that exist here.

<< The United States is a melting pot right? Then we should all have a basic understanding of the cultures that exist here. >>

What do you know about the Cuban culture?

"and if you want to learn about european history, you'd have to go to europe, right?"

Uhmm . . . can you please distinguish between culture and history?

And yes, if I want to learn about the Scandinavian, Slavic, Greek, etc., culture, I must go straight to the source. That is how I have learned about these groups. I didn't just learn them from my American history book nor my World History book. 😉 🙂
