I know theres countless threads about this, but my mother told a fellow business owner from her town that I know computers. It just went from looking at her pc to installing an ehternet card and setting up yahoo dsl. Easiest stuff on earth, and now I get to do it on an e-machine with an old lady watching me for slave labor costs. WHY GOD WHY???!!!

At least you get slave labor costs. I stopped doing it a while ago, but my friends family still bugs him nonstop about fixing their stuff.

Most friends and family always ask me to do stuff on their comp. I just tell them i am a software guy and am not good with hardware.
I explain that computers are like sports.. someone that knows about baseball may not know anything about football. Same with computers, software people suck at hardware. Call tech support i tell em. At least that's how i get away from solving every little problem that everyone i know has.

I told my folks that I'd never fix anyone elses computer unless it was a dire emergency, no matter how much begging they did. For the most part it worked, sometimes I get "those" calls and I have to try my hardest not to get pissed.

$10/hour?

<----- 75

i only work on my immediate families computers, and my close friends
if i get friends of friends or friends of family calling - i make them bring their computer to ME and i charge them a flat rate of 100 bucks + 75 for every hour after 2

one time i got a call while i was at the bar
sitting there at 10pm, bartender hands the phone to me

i answer it and it's some lady i didn't even know asking me to help her with her printer
she got my name from a friend of a friend of a friend

she didn't even know my last name, she just knew of me as "troy" the guy who hangs out at Mulligans (the bar)

Did anyone else catch that pun in that one Family Guy episode where Peter turned into a feminazi, where the feminazi he associates with is known as Gloria Ironbox. I thought that was a delicious pun, though no one else I knew got it.

And, yes, it does suck when people find out you know stuff about computers. I help my mom and dad with tech support stuff, and two of my close friends, and that's it. Anyone else gets to call tech support.

That's really sad.

On the other hand, it does show that there's a market for this type of work (one which can't be outsourced to India).

Hehe, I'm sitting here in my BSOD shirt from errorwear.com and those thinkgeek shirts are pretty cool. Anyways, I get hit up alot for computer fixing (mostly free - neighbors, friends, family) since everyone knows I do it. The cool part is some of my customers in my real business (carpet cleaning) have found out and told others, and I do make money on that. I guess I'm weird, but I actually like the challenge of fixing a rig - especially when I don't have money to upgrade my own. :)

I have to agree with Dragonlord2112 that I like a challenge to find what is wrong with a PC. The problem is that after solving what is ill with a computer than the challenge is gone and there goes the fun. I wouldn't mind helping people pick out stuff and watch them build their rigs. If they have problems, I am here to help. But its coming to a point where computer repair or building a rig is now a chore and the excitement is nearly gone.
