Anyways, I get hit up alot for computer fixing (mostly free - neighbors, friends, family) since everyone knows I do it. The cool part is some of my customers in my real business (carpet cleaning) have found out and told others, and I do make money on that. I guess I'm weird, but I actually like the challenge of fixing a rig - especially when I don't have money to upgrade my own. :)

Yea i used to also but that was a long long time ago, it gets very old very quickly.

A few good ones to build a whole wardrobe SELECTION.

I got that shirt for my father, who my mother constantly tries to drag into fixing her coworkers' computers.

When I was flying to my parent's place for Thanksgiving, I was sitting next to this girl that knew nothing about computers. We talked for most of the two hours of the flight and during the course of the conversation I told her that I've worked fixing computers, i'm currently employed as a programmer (I was at the time), I built my own computer and stuff like that. At the end of the flight she asks for my phone number cause she wanted someone to help with her with her computer and I told her that I don't really know about computers that well, i'm just a programmer. She said "Oh, so you're don't really know that much about computers..." trying to get me to give her my number. I replied with a simple "Nope." and the look on her face when she realized I really wasn't going to giver her my number was pretty funny.

Heh. I think I'm going to have to print up my own versions of a few of those Thinkgeek shirts. Unfortunately, since I'm primarily a hardware whore, I CANNOT wear black shirts on the job, unless I want to be wearing highly visible dust bunnies for the rest of the day.

I'll do things for family because most of them couldn't fix it to save their lives, but I tell friends to go to google and look for an answer. Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man how to fish, and he'll eat for the rest of his life.

It's a pain. People are very inconsiderate with other peoples knowledge of computers.

Most of them, no. Most of them are black only. And I *WILL* fix your computer (if you pay me) so I'm not interested in the white one.

I just got a call from somebody wanting to talk to somebody else in my household who wasn't there:

- Oh, okay, can you have them call me?
- Will do.
- Hey, you know about computers, right?
- ...yeah
- Can you tell me about...
<discussion of popups, spyware, etc>
- Hey you're great. You'll have to tell me all about this sometime!

I wanted to say that I usually charge $10 an hour, but I wanted to be nice to the guy so a gave a nice generic noncommittal reply.

That reminds me, I have to call the lady who actually pays me about a hard drive replacement.

I fix my parents, sisters/brothers and some really close friends stuff for free.
Of course I have a bunch of people who alawys call for the freebies, I usually tell them without seeing the PC i cant fix it. If they want to bring it over then i can do it, but I have other customers ahead of them (always use the word customers with them, that way they know they are going to be payin) they either come over and pay or dont call back. :)

I never work on another persons rig anymore. I've done it a few times in the past and it's just not worth the headache. So no, I don't hate it because I just tell them no thanks and that's that.

I'm a resnet technician for the school I attend and its a pretty easy job. Most of it is spyware crap and our job description says we cannot install an operating system or mess with hardware other than a network card. I tell the people I'll do that on the side for cash so thats cool.

When people talk about computers, I just play stupid. Then they get really excited and start showing me how to surf the Internet. But it's better than being asked to fix a stupid computer.

looks like someone else already linked the thinkgeek shirt. nothing like driving an hour away to determine that someone needs an isa network card for their 8 year old compaq. i should start demanding meals for payment at least, or a nice massage
