exactly! if i get a call and i dont recognize the number or its coming from a blocked/restricted phone, it goes straight to my voicemail. i know someone with their cell setup to block their number, so one day i took their phone and added *82 before my phone number in the address book. problem solved!

If you don't screen this type of call you are immature and in my opinion not ready for a professional position.

If you don't know the number you should let the person leave a message (if they are interested in you at all they WILL leave a message) and then you can check it and call them back when you are not hammered or in a loud area.

It's just a good idea to not answer the phone unless you know the number in my opinion.

a first impression isn't just a face to face impression... he screwed up. if i knew i applied for an internship or job, i'd make sure that if i saw a strange number, i'd step away from a party or put my drink down before i answer... guess he didnt' really care

how do you know he's drunk in the middle of the day? I screen my calls for numbers I do not recognize most of the time.

As for the guy you reached, drop him

I very rarely pick up a number I don't know. They can leave a voicemail and I'll just pretend I was at work or studying or something.

Pretty stupid imho to pick up, so screw um.

Do you mean it's a good idea not to answer the phone unless you know the number if you're drunk? Or just in general?

If you're drunk or high or whatever... sure. In general... that's just silly. Are you people afraid of interacting with someone you don't know?

You begin the interview-application process with your eyes wide open, and possibly expect some calls like this.
You put on your "A" game, or at the very least your "B-" game.
Or in the case of this candidate, your leave the game alone and help Kranky weed you out:p;

The guy today answers the phone and irritates me because he knows he's drunk, wants to get off the phone ASAP before he says something stupid, and won't let me set up a time even though it's hard as hell to get in touch with people as it is. (I'm in meetings most of the day.) Now I have a bad impression of the person.

So the person I did reach has dropped behind the person I left a voicemail for on the priority list for hiring. If you put your cell number on your resume, I'm going to use it, so be prepared!

Is it unfair to rule someone out because they answered the phone drunk and wouldn't set up an interview appointment for no good reason?

OH NOES NOT SOMEONE YOUNG JUST HAVING FUN!!!! OH NOES!

let's see how much fun these young people will have when they can't get a job because they leave bad first impressions with prospective employers trying to setup an interview with them.

And then if they do get a job, how long can they keep it since it doesn't seem like a holding a job is a top priority for them since it might get in the way of their social life.

The dumbest people can have nice looking resumes. They have help for that sort of thing.

If I simply don't like the music, it doesn't bother me and doesn't hurt.
If it's full of profanity I'd probably just hang up and move on to someone else.

You missed the point. I don't care if people get drunk in the middle of the day during their summer vacation. All I care about is trying to set up interviews with people who said they want a job and gave me a method to contact them.

And the person who IS drunk when I call and can't get it together enough to agree on a date and time and ends up aggravating me because we'll end up playing phone tag for three more days goes to the end of the line. If the guy had agreed to a time for an interview, I would have been happy.

It would be no different if the guy wasn't drunk. If I call, and you answer, then let's get it done. My point is if someone wants a job, be prepared to co-operate with the process because lots of people are prepared. It only hurts the person's chances for the job to be a PITA.

I think had I been the OP I would've laughed, sighed, and hung up. Hahaha.

Yup. Would have just told the person "Sorry, wrong number." and ran the resumé through the shredder.

I think the point was that if he wants the position, he needs to be willing to show commitment to to wanting the job before they waste their time with just trying to meet the guy. I thought it was clear enough in the OP that he didn't care that the guy was drunk, he just wanted the guy to not waste the OP's time in the OP's quest to help HIM.

enjoy your pathetic sense of superiority on the forum, it's the only thing you have in your sad little life as an annoying poster.

i think it's totally fair what you did. Think about it, what if you hire him and he answers the phone like that to a client, prospective customer, etc.

I'm not the smartest guy at my place, but if I were to receive a call from an unknown number, I would definitely turn down the music and answer the phone with a simple "Hello". IF I was drunk, I could have at least setup an interview time instead of blowing them off (how drunk can you be in the daytime?).

I believe he didn't want or cared for the position so at least you can cross one off the list.

There are times I don't want to be called but I always leave my cell phone number on my resume/cover letter anyways. I only do it because I don't want to miss an important call from the job I'm applying to. Such as driving on the highway, but I always let the employer/interviewer know that I'm driving and would call them back later. But if they don't want to me to call back, I say fuck it and I don't want to work for a company that won't respect my concerns for safety.

404 unfairness not found

you are doing the best possible job you can at contacting them. they have every chance to answer the phone right.

he shouldn't answer the phone like a gangsta if he doesn't recognize the digits

The guy did not have a pen as he said and was not in a place to conduct this type of call.

my life is great...your's obviously isn't if a young guy having a party mid-day is too much a stretch for you.

Calling someone doesn't work that way. I may be waiting for an important call that I am unsure of the callerid/number of. Someone else calls during this I may answer, but not have the time to talk...nor desire too.

You calling someone for the first step hardly has many people out. If the job is being placed so quickly chances are it's one of many many out there.

Good luck as a hiring manager (unless you are just a clerk) when they find out talent that had applied was overlooked due to personal issues.

The guy was not working for you at the time, he was free to do whatever he wanted.

If the guy was working for you at the time he was now on his time, free to do whatever he wanted still.

Being drunk is not a crime in this country and for you to expect him to be utterly business professional would mean you don't believe there is anything wrong with drinking and driving then.

I am sure he is better off without your job. You seem to take pride in many of these types of posts.

I tried to explain further in my last post but apparently I didn't do very well at it.

I post these things not as a rant, but to educate some of the members here who could benefit from some insight into how things work in a mid-sized corporation. What the heck do I have to gain from it? You don't see me bragging about my position or my salary or how many people work for me. I'm not trying to impress anyone. I'd like to think it's kind of obvious that the reason for posting things like this is to let people know how things work on the corporate side of things. I benefit from the technical forums here, I try to give back this way.
