Third time this happened this year. Resumes come in from people who want intern positions. I screen them and start calling to set up interviews.
<I dial, the phone rings...>
Candidate: <music blaring in bg> HEYYYYY, YO, WHAT UP! <mumble>
kranky: "Hello, is this Steve R-------?"
Candidate: <still the music> Uh.... yeah?
kranky: "I'm kranky from XYZ Corporation. You applied for an intern position and I'm calling to set up an interview. "
Candidate: <still loud music> Uh, who?
kranky: "This is kranky from XYZ Corporation. Intern position?"
Candidate: <music turned down now> Oh, man, hey, um, can I call you back tomorrow? I'm, um, kind of busy now.
kranky: "All I need to do is arrange a time for an interview."
Candidate: Yeah, I, uh, don't have anything to write with and, uh, I will have to call you back.
kranky: "I'll call back if we have any other openings. Thanks for your time and goodbye."
Now the dilemma. The smart person who is drunk in the middle of the day and doesn't recognize the caller ID will not answer the phone and I'll have to leave a voicemail. The guy today answers the phone and irritates me because he knows he's drunk, wants to get off the phone ASAP before he says something stupid, and won't let me set up a time even though it's hard as hell to get in touch with people as it is. (I'm in meetings most of the day.) Now I have a bad impression of the person.
So the person I did reach has dropped behind the person I left a voicemail for on the priority list for hiring. If you put your cell number on your resume, I'm going to use it, so be prepared!
Is it unfair to rule someone out because they answered the phone drunk and wouldn't set up an interview appointment for no good reason?
