Don't put your cell # on your resume if you don't want to be called

Third time this happened this year. Resumes come in from people who want intern positions. I screen them and start calling to set up interviews.

<I dial, the phone rings...>
Candidate: <music blaring in bg> HEYYYYY, YO, WHAT UP! <mumble>
kranky: "Hello, is this Steve R-------?"
Candidate: <still the music> Uh.... yeah?
kranky: "I'm kranky from XYZ Corporation. You applied for an intern position and I'm calling to set up an interview. "
Candidate: <still loud music> Uh, who?
kranky: "This is kranky from XYZ Corporation. Intern position?"
Candidate: <music turned down now> Oh, man, hey, um, can I call you back tomorrow? I'm, um, kind of busy now.
kranky: "All I need to do is arrange a time for an interview."
Candidate: Yeah, I, uh, don't have anything to write with and, uh, I will have to call you back.
kranky: "I'll call back if we have any other openings. Thanks for your time and goodbye."

Now the dilemma. The smart person who is drunk in the middle of the day and doesn't recognize the caller ID will not answer the phone and I'll have to leave a voicemail. The guy today answers the phone and irritates me because he knows he's drunk, wants to get off the phone ASAP before he says something stupid, and won't let me set up a time even though it's hard as hell to get in touch with people as it is. (I'm in meetings most of the day.) Now I have a bad impression of the person.

So the person I did reach has dropped behind the person I left a voicemail for on the priority list for hiring. If you put your cell number on your resume, I'm going to use it, so be prepared!

Is it unfair to rule someone out because they answered the phone drunk and wouldn't set up an interview appointment for no good reason?

How can a person who was intelligent enough to make a resume that was shot listed be so dumb as to not know how to receive interview calls...

You maybe caught him in his car? He might've been distracted and not drunk if that's the case.
I'd still drop him down a notch for not being smart enough to let it go to voicemail.
Any bad impression is reason enough to rule someone out imho.

You should be happy. You are screening out the people you wouldnt want working for you anyway.

My 2nd job (intern/coop too) the interviewer did the exact same thing.

All our correspondance is normally done via the school for job postings you apply they review and give interviews.

Prior to giving interviews he will CALL the actual phone #'s of potential interviewees with numbers that they post. If he cannot get a hold of them or a bad impression is laid they will not get the interview.

When he called me prior to my interview, I was in class and thus could not answer the phone. He left a message and I got back to him.

I agree with the statement in your title for sure!

This proves once again 99% of resumes are bullshit and recruiters have no idea what they're doing.

Wow, moron ftl. Good thing you found out now rather than before he were to get a position. It doesn't sound like the sort of person who'd make a good employee.

Having just been there...

1. The HR person left me a VM at work. I called back 5 minutes later
2. I have had HR people call me while I was in the middle of uh "debauchery". I went to a quiet area and took care of business.

At the very least turn down the goddamn volume. That person clearly does not care.

No kidding. I hate it when people answer the phone and aren't ready to speak yet. Like they just pick up their phone and hit "Talk" without bothering to wrap up their conversation with someone else or turn down their music. Only worse thing is when they don't do that when they are the ones calling you.

this is why i let every call from a number not allready in my phone go to voicemail, if its important they will leave a message. Did that while looking for a job, people i currently work for left a message and i called them back

If the position is an unpaid internship you aren't going to be attracting what's known as quality talent. That said if you want to throw somone's resume out because they come off like a douche on the phone, I say go for it.

Sounds like you stayed on the phone with him for at least 2 minutes. I would have hung up and threw his resume in the shredder after asking to set up an appointment and didn't receive an enthusiastic response. If they're not excited about an interview, bet your marbles they won't be excited about putting effort into the job, internship or not.
