For all you married guys (& others who don't have sole control of the checkbook)....

I was planning to upgrade my system, and build a NAS server for storing videos of my kid due in June. I spec'd it out, but made a critical error. I showed the list to my wife, and she asked about each piece I was planning on buying. Now, she's got her Master's in CompSci, so she's not clueless when it comes to computers. She nit-picked every little part, until finally I got so fed up I said f*** it. I'm just going to have to wait and hope to do it right next time.

So what's the right way? Next time, I'm going to only do one thing with her: agree on a budget. Once I know how much I can spend without arguement, then I'll buy whatever the hell I want. That's my advice. Anyone been in similar situations?

EDIT: Whoohoo 100 posts! Only took me 2.5 years! :)

The right way is to keep rat money either in your wallet or some other place known only to you. When you have enough you get what you want.

That's why you marry someone who doesn't know a thing about computers. Then you can upgrade to your heart's content, and when she says "The computer seems to be running a lot faster, why is that?" You just tell her it was a software patch from Microsoft. ;)

I assume that if you're expecting a kid in June, your wife probably is expecting too?

Pregnancy does strange things to the brains of women. Maybe she's just acting wacky about money because she's scared of the unknown.

Good luck.

Hahaha.....Got owned by wife.:p

Yeah, I would compromise with wife, at least that is what I did with my wife.
And I upgraded slowly.

ah, the double edged sword...

marrying a girl that knows computers is cool. marrying a girl that knows too much about computers and won't let you spend money on toys she knows are useless sucks.

My wife's computer saavy -- when I upgraded my computer, she demanded some upgrades, too. She got them. I can't fight the system.

Just tell her to shut up and get back into the Kichen.

then go pack your things because you will need to find a hotel for the night.

Or you could tell her this joke:

"What do you do when your dishwasher stops working?"
"Slap her."

My girlfriend's the same way. She never has any problems with me upgrading because the components that get replaced end up going to her system, so an upgrade for me is an upgrade for her too. Score! :)

Well, that's what happened to me, too. Except she was sneakier. She demanded a faster CD-RW than the one I had. I had a 32x that I was still using and I bought her a 52x. I can't win.

Well you'll just have to 'borrow' her system quite a bit, with the excuse that it can burn faster. ;)

Luckily mine's quite content with me passing stuff down to her. She understands I need the latest and greatest for my gaming habits, although she's somewhat of a casual gamer herself so her system can't be a slouch either.
