Then you were doing 78, not 75.

You do realize that the various forms of speed detection are not always 100% accurate?

And depending on tire size and the accuracy of the speedomoter you could easily have a few MPH difference there to.

I don't know a court where being 3 MPH would actually hold up.

Agreed. :)

You also said that sometimes you were sitting in the waiting room, that don't sound like jail to me, were you booked,(photographed, finger prints taken)?

Yes, I was booked.

There was no jail time involved. I'm not familiar with the laws there, but I'd be surprised if you could be jailed simply for going 30mph over the limit.

Read again - he WENT TO JAIL :p

Ohhh....I thought he just threatened him with jail. They let him drive to the station? That seems weird...why wouldn't they just arrest him normally and tow the vehicle?

Edit:

I sat in the jailer's office (sometimes in the visitor's room) while my dad made arrangements with a local bondsman (they won't do anything for someone who doesn't live local, since it's so easy to skip out on).

Doesn't sound like jail to me...

In some states the officer can revoke your liscence on the spot barring you from gettinng a new one for a minimum of a 90 days (up to a year I think), have your car impounded and towed, and then STILL give you MULTIPLE citations requiring appearances in court and possible jail time.

I'd think the whole "having the liscence revoked" thing would be enough, because most people wouldn't be able to fare very well if they couldn't drive for 3 months. I'll stick to my "feeling okay at 5 over". On a trip like yours, you probably would have saved yourself no more than an hour... now you are stuck with giving up a couple hundred hours pay for all of this.

"Once I was bailed out I took my sweet time driving home (cruising at 75, passing at 80). "

that's pretty stupid. You trying to lose your license ?

edit- and since you mentioned your Dad, I assume you are fairly young ? You should forget the idea that cops in Ill or anywhere don't care as long as your only 10 over limit. It's BS.

Yes, but I'd trust frequently calibrated police equipment to rarely yeild a difference of 1MPH, let alone 3MPH. Just because his car said 75 doesn't mean it was right.

I'm aware of that. I guess I'm glad I live in NH then. :)

For my 109 in a 65mph, I lost my license for 20 days. For the 100 in a 55mph, I lost it for 10 days. The officers in both cases did not write it up as reckless becuase I was not not driving recklessly, just fast, and I pulled over right away and was polite and honest.

Yes, but even a calibrated police speedometer or radar gun can be off by small amounts, which is why tickets generally aren't written for less then 10mph over. Using a plane is even less accurate.

I'm a speeding enthusiast, and even I am going to call you a dumba$$ for going 90 in a 65. Doing 90 ANYWHERE will get you pulled over.

So, after you got busted for speeding, you sped the rest of the way home?

Wow, you belong in that jail.

How much was bail? That does seem overly harsh. I wonder how much the fine will be?

Before you know it, cars will be calling your authorities when driven in an unsafe manner. Accelerometers, tachometers, GPS, etc. are going into all cars real soon like it or not.

Cheers!

Well, the Chicago expressways/tollways would be an exception to that.

I thought he said he was in a 65 zone, as far as I know Ill doesn't have any roads with a 75mph speed limit..

No, but to get from Arkansas to Illinois you'd go through Missouri.

Where are all you people from that cruising at 75 seems unreasonable to you? California freeways flow at 80mph+ all the time.

Doing 75 is not out of the ordinary on Interstate highways in IL, but yes the posted limit is 65.
Hell, the posted limit on Chicago highways is 55. You would certainly die in a fiery crash if you kept to it though.
