Does no one use outlook or anything anymore? I dont store emails on the server and I only use webmail when Im at work and download them when I get home. Am i in the minority?

It's some sort of status symbol to people here I think, being part of the Google's in-crowd or something. Sorry to tell all you Gmail members, but having an e-mail account does not entitle you to Google stock options nor does it put you on the fast-track for Google employment!

I'll say it again, if it's space you need, and you have spare computer parts and a static IP, you can set up a Linux box running squirrelmail and have web access.

If only I have static IP...

I don't see the point either. Some guy @ work was telling me about it. I told him that it'll just be a magnet for spam. It's not like you'll ever come close to filling up a gig of mail (unless you just love spam!)

I pay $4/mo to have my domain hosted. WELL worth it.

I run my own mailserver so I get whatever username I want & however much storage space I want. I guess this is for those folks that don't do that type of thing.

I guarantee that 90% of the people clamouring for a gmail invite do not and will not use it as their primary email.

It's a status symbol, getting in before the crowd, and the chance to get a uniqueish email address. Like having a 4 digit ICQ number 😉

Threaded email, google style email search, flagging, space, INCREDIBLE GOOGLE-LIKE SPEED!

I like the speed the best. Oh yeah and it looks better than yahoo webmail. And squirrelmail is just plain ugly.

ok. let me say it again.

Gmail is NOT about the space.
I agree. I did not see the point if it, but when someone I am going to be working with on a software project said he had an invite, I asked him for it. After I started playing with it, the interface is growing on me. I personally think the interface of gmail is why it is so popular with the people that have gotten it. I will never use a gig of mail, but the interface is definitely superior to any I have used before.

And you expect my 78 year old grandma to do the same? Ok... seriously, I got a total of 8 invitations and I only used 1 for myself. The rest went to friends/family members who can't setup their own server, own domain, or a client as its too complicated for them.

I like the ActiveX functions. It's like a program in itself. 🙂
It uses ActiveX? I am using a mac, so I know it isn't using ActiveX on my computer with Safari.

I like it because I don't have to worry about setting up my own account or even worrying about it being up when I need it most. Yes, I already have the space and e-mail setup, but I still prefer gmail. Simply because it's easiest on my part. First, if I'm messing around with the server, I don't have to worry about e-mail. Next, there's plenty of space so why use my own. Third, it's easier for others to remember and sound out. Sure, I could get some easy to remember domain, but I have no reason to need to mess around with that stuff.

For those wondering, I already have a resellers account so I have plenty of space and bandwidth for my needs
