Don't expect a Shivering Isles size expansion for Fallout 3

In an interview with Gamasutra, Bethesda's VP Pete Hines stated that after experimenting with tiny DLC to very large DLC like Shivering Isles, Bethesday prefers to concentrate on smaller pieces of DLC.

We did what I think was the first ever full expansion on a console for download. We looked at what we liked and what we didn't, and what the people liked.

What we discovered was that we want to be able to do stuff that doesn't take a year to come out.

All these people are out there playing our game by the hundreds of thousands on a daily basis and we want to be able to bring those folks something they could do in a much shorter time frame, rather than just saying, "See you next year."

That instantly ruled out doing a big expansion because those things just take so damn long to do."

"So we started looking at the biggest stuff we'd done that people really liked, but that we could do in smaller, digestible chunks. That's where we came to the Knights of the Nine model -- it's substantive and it adds multiple hours of game play and new items.

But we can do it in a time frame that allows us to get it out without waiting forever. That's what we've gone for with Fallout 3."

Expansions are dead

This is especially saddening coming from Bethesda since their expansions have always been top notch.

Tribunal/Bloodmoon/Shivering isles

were all at least as good if not better than the originals.

My thoughts exactly, follow the money. They probably think they can make more off of smaller add-ons.

a.k.a. nickel and dime the customers to death with many little overpriced add-on content. I raise both middle fingers to DLC.

yep, this paying decent amount of $ for piddly crap is not going to be a good thing for gamers in general.

What a low move by Bethesda, The Pitt and Anchorage were really mediocre "expansions" to the game, they need to release an expansion proper instead of milking customers' money with sub-par DLC.

I guess it's the consumer's fault though, they are the idiots that pay for DLC in the first place.

After reading this I think I'll skip the next Fallout DLC. I bought the Pitt, it was OK, but I didn't by Anchorage. But if this is what they are going to pull, screw it, I'm not buying. Shame, because if they did Shivering Isles sized expansion I'd easily pay $30 for something like that.

Then again, I'm probably just talking all big and as soon as it's released I'll bend over, open my wallet and take it. 🙁

This will solidify a lot of gamers with being content to buy the Game of the Year editions near the end of the product's retail life cycle.

Plus with the DLC you aren't paying for media, cover artwork, distribution, retail space ect.

Good for shareholders. Bad for gamers.

I'm with you guys, but unfortunately all indications are that the public is willing to pay for it, so I'm not expecting the trend to slow...

Yep pretty much console's fault for this and everybody suffers.

You'll be skipping the only DLC that I think will be worth a shit. The 3rd DLC is supposed to raise the level cap above 20.

Still they said the content is only about as long as the Pitt, which took me all of two days to beat.

Yep..thats about it. Console gamers pay for just about everything from horse armor, gamer pics, "premium" themes, weapon packs, map packs and now little nuggets of gameplay like the Fallout DLC. I for one will never tell anyone what to do with their money but I thought the Elder Scroll expansions were all worth every penny I spent on them. I have yet to purchase a Fallout DLC as much as enjoyed the game. I read that the DLC games barely have any exploration too. I absolutely LOVED just wandering around DC in Fallout and the DLC doesn't have that kind of feel from what I read.

If anything I hope the third DLC is bigger and perhaps maybe they'll package all 3 DLC's for one special price. I'll get it if that happens.

GOTY and Platinum Hits FTW

An increased level cap sounds good, but they need to add some more content that actually challenges the player a little at level 20. As it is now the only enemy I can't one hit kill is a Super Mutant Behemoth, and I have more bottle caps than I know what to do with. Not to mention the fact that the Chinese Stealth Armor makes engaging an enemy completely optional.
