"oh, wait, she's going back, will it be there!?.... ooooo, no dice today"

i thought that scene was hilarious

To sum it up in terms that other can understand...

Time travel can only occur to one individual. A metal object has to appear (the jet engine), and that metal object is a sign that the "other" (or tangent as mentioned in the movie) universe has been created. And, as events play out, the metal object that appears will eventually end up killing them in the other universe. if that doesn't happen, then the world ends, pretty much.

if donnie dies, the world is saved, if donnie doesn't die, the world ends. because the tangent universe opened up will collapse on the original universe.

and no one knows how or why the receiver is chosen. also, people that play out in their life up until the end of the world are "living dead"

By your description, time travel can only occur to one person if a metal object appears? Wow.

BTW, I love the movie and didn't care to try to unravel all of its mysteries. The paradox was just to great.

Watch Lost Highway for more 'WTF' fun!

yes, and the only person that can experience time travel is the one who is affected by the metal object. in donnie's case, he experiences what happened in roberta sparrow's book, where he sees interesting worm-hole looking water formations coming from people's chests that appear where a person is going to go.

I concur. I loved the film, but the meat of this film is in the cinematography and the character development / dialogue. The whole technical aspect of time travel and alternate universes is completely irrelevant, and was, I suspect, thrown together after the final edit to appease people who didn't "get it". Then again, after seeing the director's cut, I wonder if even that wasn't an accident.

Lost Highway, OTOH, was definitely WTF, but not fun. I definitely didn't get it.

I was a fan WAY AFTER it got big.
😀

I saw it for the first time about a year ago and loved it.
Then watched it a few more times and it became my top movie, which has since been booted by Cash.
🙂

look up the philosophy of time travel..its the book in the film. then it makes more sense. course its bs that u'd need toread such a thing.

Donnie Darko is one of those films that college-aged students seems to adore solely because everyone else does. They think that by watching this film they are gaining some huge insight into life. It's quite humorous, actually.

Not a bad film in general, but it's nothing special, too. Definitely overhyped by the "The Boondock Saints" crowd.

great movie. WHen I saw it i was so confused tho. I have read many ideas on the web explaining it....still doesnt work out completely

The Director's Cut explained it a bit more. Either one though is worth watching.

Edit:

"First of all, Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette. Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel's evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village. But the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. And as for the whole gang-bang scenario, well, it just couldn't happen. Smurfs are asexual. They don't even have ... reproductive organs under those tiny, white pants. It's just so illogical, about being a Smurf, you know? I mean, what's the point of living ... if you don't have a dick?"

Fantastic movie. One of the few that I watched twice right in a row (Usual Suspects was another).

I sort of agree with the guy who said the time travel part is irrelevant, though I would not use that strong of a statement, I just think it is not integral to understand that part in order to enjoy the film as a whole. There are so many different things going on throughout, the time travel portion is overshadowed IMHO.

Maybe that's because college aged students tend to be deeper thinkers to some extent since they, by virtue of being in school, use their brains more on a daily basis than some of us are apt to.

I haven't been college age in QUITE some time and yet I thought it was very thought provoking and on subsequent viewings there are many subtleties that are easily missed the first time around. One of the things I liked best about it is that each person that watches it can glean out a different "message" than the next. Just in the way it's put together, it forces you to use your mind, which, it seems, few people actually DO these days. 😉

"I'm not AFRAID anymore!"

I love this movie. It was very captivating and served as an epic mystery for me to solve over the course of a few days. I kept watching it, eager to pick out things that I might have missed during the previous viewings. The characters are great (that was the best movie dad, ever) and it completely reopened my eyes to the greatness of Tears for Fears. I'm 27, so I kinda forgot about them. I was a young boy back in the early-mid 80's.

As is your absurdly shallow opinion on the matter. It's a quirky, rare type of movie that many people enjoy experiencing from time to time. You honestly think it's peer-pressure or something?
