No sh!t. I can't believe anyone is stupid enough not to realize that people who never/rarely travel wouldn't know that travel times are standardized in 24 hour time.
The only aviators involved are the pilots. Selling tickets to passengers who may or may not even know what military time is isn't aviation, it's the tourist industry.

Sarcastic remarks aside, if someone told you to be somewhere at 9 'o' clock, wouldn't you ASK THEM if they meant AM or PM?
You don't have to travel a lot, or know a lot about aviation, to simply ask for a basic detail instead of assume.
flights past midnight are very common out of Vancouver (YVR) for example. Like someone else said, there are a few trans-pacific flights that leave after midnight (Eva Air has a flight like this I believe that leaves after 2AM).
Were the tickets fully restricted? I don't think you ever mentioned it, but if they are the lowest possible fare type, then the tickets are considered forfeited. Call and ask and see what the airline can do...

No sh!t. I can't believe someone that travels so rarely wouldn't double-check on departure time and flight status at least a day before the flight.
1. they should have called. The truth hurts but in this day and age incompetence from drones working for large organizations is expected
2. If it says 1:35 and that is it I do not see how it can be for 1:35pm unless it is assumed. In that case yell at the airline arguing that in 24-hour time it meant 1:35am and that all airlines use 24hr time.
3. Either way, I hope their vacation isn't ruined

Read above. I'm not defending them for making the assinine mistake of not confirming the departure time and flight status.

All the BS aside, your parents have zero chance of getting a refund. The only way they'll be able to salvage the holiday is to find an airline CS empathetic enough to allow them to wait stand-by for another flight to Cuba.
The only other option is to purchase one-way tickets to Cuba seperately.

Tickets to Cuba cost as much as the whole vacation in the cheapest place so that's not an option. Also, one way tickets aren't cheaper at all because there is nobody going one way from Cuba, if you know what I mean.
Another b1tch is that we have some lame holiday tomorrow so the offices are all closed until tuesday...
