This thread is overdue for someone to say non-chain restaurant burgers using fresh ground beef and home baked rolls >> any chain.
Well that, and its a thread about dollar menu items and people are posting photos of burgers that cost > $4.00.

Wendy's had very decent burgers 20+ years ago, then they went the way of most other large chains using cheapening tactics. I'm not crazy about their new buns, either. But still, they taste more like a burger than any of McD regular menu burgers.

Either that, or my own tastes have changed significantly over the years. Maybe a combination of both. I used to prefer more meat and less veggies, and now I like more veggies and less meat (not like the super thin pressed-out patties that are used on regular McD hamburger or cheeseburger).

I think part of our health problems is not that we eat what we do, but we eat the wrong proportions. like burgers... 1/2lb of meat is crazy..

in Asian culture, meat is a small portion of the meal.. veggies are huge. and science has shown that it might be a healthier way to live.

The meat culture increased with incomes and also declining prices due to modern large-scale livestock operations. Meat, particularly beef and pork, used to be more expensive and was affordable (on a regular basis) mostly by the more affluent. What little meat working-class people could afford were the leftover "parts" or edible offal that didn't fetch a good price. e.g. feet, hocks, tongue, tripe, and tougher low-end cuts of meat, which were usually used for flavoring a meal or dish, not as a centerpiece or feature. It was easier to cheaply have a dozen or two chickens on a small parcel than a cow or pig, the latter of which people were more likely to sell to a butcher than to consume themselves, but did often consume the chickens (sparingly).

As incomes and standards of living rise in Asia, you'll probably see the same trends (they already are present among the rising affluent).

I love a good patty melt.

The only fast food I can think of that even has close to one is Jack in the Box, and it's not very good (grilled sourdough burger).

Carl's Jr. now has a 'grilled cheese' burger, it's ok.

Most diners though - very good.

neither of those burgers have grilled onions nor are they on rye bread. therefore, they're burgers and not patty melts.

also, patty melts don't have veggies or pickles. burgers do.

A melt is born simply by grilling any type of sliced bread with the cheese on it, making all gooey.

Doesn't have to have onions.

Doesn't have to be on rye.

Can contain veggies or pickles.

All of you guys are missing the point. You can get an In-N-Out Double Double for under $3. A cheeseburger is about $1.50.

IMO Shake Shack to me is better than In-N-Out but it also runs almost $6.

Those aren't the prices out here. An in-n-out cheeseburger is over 50% higher than that.

I might give five guys 'second most overrated burger'.

Which isn't to say they're bad - their walls are covered with 'best ever!' material.

I was excited when 5 Guys opened up a store near here. I had head such good things about them "Best Ever' 'Zagat this, Zagat that' etc but there burger was just slightly better than an average fast(ish) food burger. It was certainly nothing to compare with a real burger.

So congrats to 5 guys - you managed to barely beat an absurdly low bar!

(I do love the excessive portions of frys though!)

I'm thinking that the new higher end burger chains like Five Guys, Bobby's Burger Palace, and Jake's Wayback Burger are cannibalizing MickeyD's sales here in the Northeast.

mcdonalds will change their food and come back with a fury. they will find a way to make their stuff healthy enough that the fda endorses them or something, and everyone will flock back to 'all american' mcd's.
