Doing Vegas on the cheap? (flight, hotel, etc)

I've stayed at many strip hotels for <100/n.

I never went out of my way to find deals. But on the weekend, <$200 at a prime resort is a bargain to me, so I guess I mean asking price. If you blow enough at blackjack they'll comp you everything.

My friend's mom would always get a room at the Polo Towers for a week. I stopped by a couple times. It was OK, and I have to imagine cheaper than any casino.

Anyway, with the economy up, I think prices have gone back to crazy as well.

between travelzoo/priceline/email offers, there is zero reason to pay anywhere near asking price.

of course, none of this applies if you're trying to travel during a major convention.

I went at the end of March. Place was a ghost town. I would imagine prices are still down.

I use priceline for airlines just because it's easier... :hmm:
I go once a year for the BCA Nationals. It's always busy that week, so I assume lots of things are going on. It's my only sure annual 100% vacation, so I try not to sweat the details.

You can still get really good deals on peak dates, just not through hotwire etc.

For those hotel choices and not renting a car, I would stay at Treasure Island. Excalibur is kind of crappy, Luxor is pretty far South and away from everything else, and that leaves Treasure Island.

TI is only three blocks from Excalibur/Luxor. Admittedly three blocks is a ways in Vegas, but it's not THAT far.

Oh dear god yes. Work made the mistake of sending me and my coworker down to Vegas to do some core sampling during CES. We wound up staying at a long-stay apartment type deal that was technically in Henderson and it was still over what work wanted to reimburse us for nightly. Fortunately when we explained "CES is in town, good luck finding an opening somewhere we won't get knifed" they agreed to pay more.

There's quite literally hundreds of thousands of rooms to stay at in the Las Vegas area. It's amazing how they all fill up when something big hits town.

Its over 2 miles and would take 30-40 minutes to walk it. That would be an absolutely brutal walk in the middle of summer. I dont mind walking vegas in winter, but in summer, its not going to happen.

That's why cabs exist.

No that is why rental cars exist. Cabs are too expensive when you can get rental cars for pretty cheap. I used to walk when I went to Vegas, now I always either have my car or I rent a car.

But if you are doing Vegas on a cheap budget, every dollar counts.

How do you drive after drinking on the strip for 12 hours? 😕

Clearly I hit up vegas in an entirely different manner than you =P

I am not much of a drinker. I'll occasionally have few drinks, but never enough to be drunk or enough to blow above the legal limit. There was a time I was a pretty bad binge drinker/alcoholic. Not anymore. Not after I came an inch from being arrested. Almost getting arrested makes you contemplate things/your life.

I think the last time I was hammered in Vegas, was ~6 years ago. It involved Blondies in Miracle Mile $20 all you can drink for two hours happy hour, except we started an hour in and had to "catch up".

They at one point had much higher occupancy rates and much higher avg daily rates even mid week. There rooms going for $47/night thats not good. If it stays like that, maybe Ill forgo comped rooms for 2 nights at lower tier MGM properties and stay as Cosmo during my next trip.

Your midweek forecasted occupancy will be dependent on the LVCA headcount. If you don't have any conventions and events going on, the hotel is going to take a hit and flood the discounters with cheap rooms. Occasional low rates is not a negative reflection in the lack of interest in the hotel.

I was there a bit ago and the luxor had some cheap rooms. Even ran into Carrot top on the way in once.

I'm not entirely convinced the cabs are any safer. One time my friend asked the driver if he could smoke his joint in the cab. The cabbie said hell yeah! and lit his own and then started driving...

When I was a teenager with a fake ID we stayed at the Tropicana for $40/night. I've heard people bash the place, and I'm sure a strip veteran wouldn't be caught dead in the place, but fact is it was typical Travelodge-type accommodation with a casino on the ground floor and walking distance to the fancier places. I had the same Vegas experience there than I did when I came back for company-paid high class stuff elsewhere, since little time is actually spent in the room anyway.

Honestly that's all you need in a room: a place to rest your head, shower, and change clothes. There's so much to do in Vegas you will rarely be in the hotel, unless its for gambling, food, or show purposes.

I used to say all of the major casinos could provide that, but then I had that crappy experience at the Excalibur. A lot of little things can spoil a room, and overpowering scented deodorizers are one of them.

Dude that guy is ripped. When he's not doing physical comedy he does bodybuilding, no joke.

btw, I went to the Hilton... and did the $20 trick... it did work! I got updated to a suite... was awesome. Try that!

Worked for me at NYNY in March, too.

I used to stay at the Tropicana for my budget trips to Vegas. The Island Tower rooms used to be the best value on the strip. The Garden rooms were garbage. I haven't stayed there in awhile, though. I've kind of migrated to the NYNY, Monte Carlo and some of the other ones like that. The NYNY is my favorite spot at the moment. Good and clean, nothing too fancy and it's not so huge that you will keep getting lost trying to traverse the casino floor (i.e. Mandalay, MGM Grand, Mirage, etc.).

excalibur is a dump, stay somewhere else imo. maybe they have good upgraded rooms there, but the one i stayed in was junk (their normal room)

Yup everything I read about this place turned me off. One of the travel sights I was reading for reviews has several people saying bedbugs for that place. Excalibur is the cheapest for a reason. Also it is more sleazy with all the girls dancing on poles. Excalibur reminded me of a college atmosphere whereas I and my wife stayed at the MGM which was more laid back and up scale.

i goto vegas about 3-4 times a year... love that place...just to get away... and enjoy myself... I am an east coast guy as well... you can find flights for a good price if you just search... i just landed a RT N/S Flight from BWI-LAS for $198 bucks....

Also get a players card, and gamble a little and you will get free hotel rooms from different folks.....

Eating in vegas isnt cheap so be prepared...

Tropicana was a dump but they redid everything with flat screen TVs and cleaned out all the bugs and got all new staff. They turned that pace around. When I was there they were in the middle of reconstruction of that place and was the cheapest place to stay but I did not want to stay with all the construction going on.

MGM was nice but I would say it is about middle of the road when compared to others. MGM did not have any flat screen TVs where I stayed and this was 2 years ago. Also did not read about any bed bugs there so I went this them.

Yea I'm talking like 2005. It was a dump but like I say no different than your average Motel 6.. do not care if I'm coming back at 6am anyway. If the goal is to meet women ok maybe different but still they probably wouldn't care and if they did you just pick up a room at a nicer place.
