Given very little time to react, my first response would be to square up to the dog and get get big and get loud.

I would have made the dog love me, feed it and take care of it (along with hundreds, maybe thousands of others) and then tell everyone about it on ATOT in a not so clever ruse to get people to think that I'm not the huge asshole that I've proven myself to be, year after year.
But that's where I draw the line.

George Zimmerman it. What if it was your kid walking out and getting mauled?

Should have ran at the dog, jumped over it, grabbed it by the tail, spun it around and tossed it back into the neighbor's yard. All the time, you should have had a continuous scream.

I've thought about trying that route and giving the dog food any time I saw it, but I wondered if the owners would freak out if they saw me tossing pieces of meat over their fence at their dog.

Hauled ass... didn't say I would make it or not.

If I did make it, I carry a bat the next time I leave my house, or carry myself with a bat to neighbour's house at 3am.

This happened to my friend who like me is a happy gun owner. He was not carrying at the time, he was with his wife walking to their car when the neighbor's dog broke away from his restraint (rope or chain, I dunno what) and went straight for her. He went in front and let it go for his leg. Then he punched the dog as hard as he could. Luckily the dog was in ramming mode and did not clamp down on the leg. The punch made the dog retreat.

Directly after there was a communication between homeowners and police, resolution was not reached, and now the wife open carries. Trust me when I say that I will gladly destroy the animal if I feel it threatened my family. I don't care if it means a fine or jail or what but I will be God damned if I let a creature like that live.

If a dog comes at me, I come at the dog. I win if the dog backs off, and if it doesn't at least I am fighting it on my terms.

Assume dog has rabies (obviously violent)--get prophylaxis, alert appropriate authorities--have dog examined. Profit?

All the time yelling "Stop Resisting!"... wait, sorry, that's the battle cry for unlawful beating. Yell "They're coming right for us!".

Clearly, the entire incident could have been prevented if the conflicting parties had simply taken steps to understand each other. For example, it is customary in canine circles to sniff each other's a$$es in greeting...

I typically wear steel toed shoes, so I would have booted that bastard square if the face. Hopefully I'd break a few teeth and or bones, but dogs are pretty damn tough. However the force of a steel plate smashing their face with the force of a soccer kick will probably make the dog rethink it's actions.

I don't think I'd resort to pulling out a knife or anything unless the thing is going crazy and starts pentrating skin b/c things can get really tricky (with the law and stuff )when a weapon is involved. With steel boots though, nobody knows the difference b/c they look like business shoes.

I'd probably call Animal Control as well b/c I have small kids around. I'd want it documented that the dog attacked me viciously.

kicking with your toes, steel covered or otherwise is going to set you up for some broken bones.

Simple, stomp it and kick it as hard as you can and call animal control when you get home so it doesn't happen to others. That dog needs to be put down if it attacked you.

Seriously. What ever happened to dealing with situations like a reasonable person instead of looking for a payday?

Here is what I'd do.

1. Talk to the neighbor. Let them know what happened (if the kid grabbed the dog maybe they don't even know). Tell them that this isn't acceptable.

2. If need be (unresponsibe neighbor, or it happens again), escalate to Animal Control.
Absolutely this. No more, no less. If you feel that they were unconcerned about it, then a call has to be made to law enforcement/animal control.
You do that for the rest of your neighbors.
