You should have called on this prior. Having aggressive dogs harass people passing by is not allowed in most of suburbia. Sure, 20 miles out of town in a rural area this is pretty normal. If you walked down from the road to the property, the dogs will be pissed wondering WTF are you.

LOL at all the kids saying to shoot it, when you got away fine.

A neighbor round the corner has an aggressive dog, seems to think she's twice as big as she is. She charged me one day when I was out walking. I stopped, faced her, and told her exactly what would happen if she tried to bite. She stood about eight feet away, didn't come any closer until I turned to walk away.

I had to call the same neighbor at 4am, because she left the dog outside barking all night. She hasn't done it since.

sshhh...don't say 'pit bull' without DNA evidence that it is in fact a pit-bull, or the pitsarethebest.com crown will come crashing in, saying this thread is really part of a tin-foil secret plan to rid the world of their only joy in this world...........

If it's me - I'd ask myself what would happen if one of my kids had been in my shoes - if that dog could have harmed them, then I'm calling the police to report the incident.

Irresponsible dog owners are suckage.

This. Police aren't going to care since you are not hurt. If you want, call animal control about this incident.

Here, the animal control officers are part of the police department...

Still, report the owners. If the dog was willing to challenge you, what would it do to a child who wasn't able to defend him/herself?

dog bite litigation is big these days. The dog owner is the automatic looser when they loose control of their dog. Get a lawyer. Get the judgement. The lawyer will inventory the dog owners financial and personal property per court order. You and the lawyer cash in. No money or inventory?? That's what the judgement is all about. Your lawyer will monitor the losers assets and revenue for years on end looking for the pay day. Get The Judgement. Get A Lawyer..

Ugh, I feel slimy just reading that. Almost everything that's wrong with America, in one post.

Too bad the OP wasn't injured, what is he going to sue for? Thanks for trolling.

I would have run into the neighbors yard, started a fight with it, and then when it bit back i would have shot it for fear that it would gheto stomp me to death.

so, I left my house today to go run some errands... as I was walking from my house to my car, my neighbor's dog comes out of nowhere and attacks me.

(I didn't provoke it and I'm not sure if it either hopped the fence, one of the kids left the door open, or if it was just outside unattended... I didn't notice it until it started charging for me, which is unusual -- usually I always notice their dog because it aggressively barks at anything walking down the street at all hours of the day)

no real damage done. I had to kick it a couple times to keep it away from me and it did bite me but didn't puncture my jeans much less skin. after about 20-30 seconds of this, one of the kids runs up and drags it back into the house. I shouted a couple profanities at him and went along my way.

I'm curious as to what ATOT would have done, though. I kinda wished I had threatened to call the cops -- no damage was done to me, but I'm a 30 year-old guy in reasonably good shape. what if it had been a kid walking home from school or one of my elderly neighbors instead? hell, if I'd been wearing shorts instead of thick jeans I could be looking at a round of rabies shots.

Guy? I thought you were a woman?

Seriously. What ever happened to dealing with situations like a reasonable person instead of looking for a payday?

Here is what I'd do.

1. Talk to the neighbor. Let them know what happened (if the kid grabbed the dog maybe they don't even know). Tell them that this isn't acceptable.

2. If need be (unresponsibe neighbor, or it happens again), escalate to Animal Control.

Probably the same thing that you did, but with more yelling. If it had actually hurt me I would have called the cops and all that fun stuff.

People who can't control their dangerous dog don't deserve to have their dangerous dog and have made said dangerous dog's life forfeit.

i'd tell the white trash owners of the dog in a polite way that if the dog is off it's leash again, i wouldn't hesitate to call the cops because the dog bit you while you fought it off and an elderly person or a child might not be as lucky in an unlucky situation... because then, they'd have to put their dog down and i'm sure no one wants that to happen.

Pretty much how you handled it really, maybe have a word with the owners if you think it would make a difference.

If it starts happening more often then maybe take it further.

I would have pulled out my .45 and blown it away before it got close enough to threaten me
