For many, perhaps, but not for everyone, by a long shot.

No doubt, the overwhelming majority of burgers sold are cheap fast food ones, with the 99 cent specials leading the pack by numbers sold, yet there are innumerable "gourmet burger" places where the burgers cost 5,6,7++ times what a one buck burger does.

Different strokes for different folks.

No, my wife does not do that, however she cooks everything on high and burns more food than she doesn't. That's why I do the majority of the cooking. Yes, I realize it was probably part of her plan to get out of cooking.

Heh. Wifey no cook. I do all of the cooking and like to make risotto so Arborio rice is a necessary staple in the TLC household.

That is hella expensive rice. I wonder what is parked in your driveway.
Nothing fancy, I assure you.

uh... Question:

has anyone tried the same risotto recipe using the fancier rice and the... well... cheaper rice?

We just tried risotto for the first time (we made a lemon recipe with, well there's the rind and juice, white wine, chicken stock, fresh green onions and parsley - amazing, btw), and we used that Arborio rice. It'll last a few family-size servings of risotto, so it's not a bad deal at all. If it can be done for half the price, and still reach the texture of good risotto... I'm down for saving a few bucks.

You might be able to get close to the same texure with another variety of shirt grain rice. Something like the Spanish short grain used for paella could work. What I'm not sure about is the comparison in starch content. The Italian short grain rices like Arborio have a high starch content and that's what thickens the chicken stock and produces that lovely sauciness at the end.
