It seems that people in our office never proof-read their email to IT support. Some examples include:

-"The sender is one of our Clients and I need to know if the nature of her communication.
Thanks!"

-"Good morning,
I have printing. It does not work right. Please help!"

-"Hi
Again problems sending document to Taiwan. This was a return receipt that was requested.
Could make sure the problem in Taiwan. I had 23 of this rejected mail"

My personal favorite is:
"What is happening?"
Nothing else other than the name. No indications as to what he is referring to, information about symptons. programs - nothing.

Maybe he/she is just interested in how your day is going? Respond with "Not much, just responding to retarded help requests. What's happening with you?".

hehe that would be funny

edit:

the "office manager" here types the way she thinks, so every memo and correspondence from her is in broken sentences, questions that relate to little and random ideas revisited in different places in the text. kind of funny, but pathetic as well.

The first language of most of my co-workers is French. They can all speak English, but not all speak it too well. I don't see spelling mistakes, but I do see grammatical mistakes in the emails I get.

it's interesting to see email break down into this stream of consciousness type communication. I can't say I am immune from it either. It's sometimes evident in forums posts too. You can almost see the people typing out whatever crap comes to mind in whatever random manner.

ah, the irony. ;)

Sorry, but when you start a thread like this, you've got to be prepared for this sort of thing. :)

Very few native speakers can write proper English. It's amazing how many people, even on this board which surely represents the upper tier of education and intelligence, think 'alot' and 'asif' are words. It's like they've never read a book.

I work with European colleagues almost daily. It's sometimes challenging communicating in English with non-native speakers, especially when 99% of their experience has been speaking the language with other non-native English speakers. I spent some time in Germany last month and it was much easier to speak face to face.

In email they are always taking sentences as being offensive. No big deal, just explain to them before hand the issue and they settle down.

Well, sure I can understand those who have English as a second language, but these are, by and large, native speakers

I work with the UK, France, Germany and Luxembourg, as well as Beijing and Tokyo. France is BY FAR the worst. China has more trouble with English but France always sends everything "URGENT please to fix right away" emails and then launches into explanations and justifications the moment I ask questions or try to prioritize their work. Germany is the best to work with, clear, concise and straightforward. Japan is most competent in following instructions and China is the most polite.

Hell, those aren't any worse than half of the ATOT posts...:D

We're doing a project in my MIS class next week about the difficulty in translations from English to Chinese and back, plus English to Spanish and back, and a few other languages. (One or two are arabic in nature...Farsi and ?)

That should prove to be interesting...

No surprises there.

Got one today:

"Help This is URGENT!
I have used this before but I can find (path)"

I so want to respond "If you can already find it what can we help you out with?"
